Conroy Joins Furman Men's Basketball Coaching Staff

Tulane Graduate Spent The Past Three Seasons At South Alabama

Greenville, S.C. – Riley Conroy, who has spent the past three seasons as an assistant at the University of South Alabama, has joined the Furman men's basketball staff, it was announced this week by Paladin head coach Bob Richey.

"We're thrilled to welcome Riley Conroy to the Furman family," said Richey. "Riley has established himself as one of the bright young recruiters in college basketball, and his experience at University of South Alabama helped prepare him to make an immediate impact here at Furman. He brings tremendous knowledge and a deep understanding of what it takes to identify and develop winning players and culture. Riley is someone who aligns with our values and vision for this program, and I'm confident our players, staff, and community will benefit greatly from his passion and knowledge of the game."

Conroy helped lead South Alabama to back-to-back 21-win seasons. During the 2025-26 campaign, he helped the Jaguars to a 21-12 overall record, 11-8 conference mark, and a trip to the NIT. South Alabama's Chaze Harris earned Sun Belt Player of the Year honors and first team all-conference accolades while Adam Olsen was selected to the All-Sun Belt Second Team.

In the 2024–25 season, South Alabama captured its first Sun Belt regular season title since 2008 by posting a 21-11 overall record, the program's highest regular-season win total in 17 years. The Jaguars ranked sixth nationally in field-goal percentage defense (.384), 17th in scoring defense (64.3 points per game), and 15th in steals per game (9.3). South Alabama also ranked seventh in fouls per game (13.3), sixth in turnover margin (+4.9), seventh in turnovers per game (9.2), and 17th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.59), leading the Sun Belt in all five categories.

During his first season, Conroy was involved in the development of standout guards Tyrell Jones and Samuel Tabe. In 2023–24, Jones led the team in scoring (12.7 ppg), assists (2.0 apg), and steals (1.5 spg), while Tabe surpassed 1,000 career points and became the only Jaguar to be named Sun Belt Player of the Week after a 35-point performance against Arkansas State — the highest single-game point total in the league that season. At the conclusion of the campaign, both athletes signed professional contracts. Tabe inked a deal with BC Psychiko of the Greek Elite League, and Jones signed with Enosis Neon Paralimni of the Cypriot Elite League.

Before joining South Alabama, Conroy spent four seasons at Southeastern Louisiana, serving as director of operations and recruiting in his first year before being promoted to assistant coach in 2020. At age 24, he was the youngest Division I assistant in men's basketball during the 2020–21 season. Conroy helped lead Southeastern to a 19-14 record in 2021–22 and a trip to the Southland Conference championship game. The following year, the program won 12 conference games. He played a significant role in recruiting and developing 2023 All-Southland First Team guard Boogie Anderson. Conroy was named to Silver Waves Media's "75 Top Rising Mid-Major Assistant Coaches" list in both 2021–22 and 2022–23.

Prior to his collegiate coaching career, Conroy worked at Sunrise Christian Academy in Wichita, Kansas, where he helped lead the team to a top-10 national ranking. Eleven players from that team went on to play at the Division I level, including signees at Michigan State and Creighton.

A native of New Orleans, La., Conroy is the son of Ed Conroy, head coach at The Citadel and former Furman assistant coach.
