Box Score 1 Chattanooga, Tenn. – Taylor Long earned a pair of wins in the circle and Raven Jones delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10
th in game two as Chattanooga swept a Southern Conference softball doubleheader from Furman 9-0, 7-6 Saturday afternoon at Frost Stadium.
Game 1: Chattanooga 9, Furman 0 (6 inn.)
Long limited Furman to just two hits and fanned six Paladins in a complete game effort to power the Mocs to a 9-0, six-inning victory in game one of the weekend series.
The Mocs jumped in front in the bottom of the second on Jade Gainer's homer and added another run in the third inning. Chloe Lackey's RBI double ignited a four-run fourth inning that also featured RBI singles from Mia Leone and Grace Hixson before Baileigh Pitts capped the outburst with a sacrifice fly to push the margin to 6-0.
Zoe Wright tripled to drive in a run in the bottom of the fifth inning and Pitts triggered the mercy rule with a two-run blast in the bottom of the sixth for the final 9-0 scoreline.
Long, who held Furman to two hits and two walks, improved to 10-15 in the circle. Gainer, Lackey, and Wright finished with two hits apiece while Pitts totaled three RBI.
Starter
Kristyn Embler (8-13) took the loss for Furman after allowing five earned runs on seven hits over three-plus innings in the circle. She issued two walks and did not record a strikeout.
Game 2: Chattanooga 7, Furman 6 (10 inn.)
Furman rallied with three two-out runs in the top of the seventh to force extra innings in game two, but the Mocs scratched across a run on Jones' walk-off safety in the 10
th to lead Chattanooga (21-27, 9-11 SoCon) to a 7-6 win in the nightcap.
Furman (13-38, 5-15 SoCon) trailed 6-3 entering the seventh before
AB Cipalla, Embler, and
Sylvia Burroughs reached base on consecutive one-out singles.
Katie Peeler drove in a run with a base knock to left-center and
Rachel Hawkins followed with a two-run hit to center field to drive in two more and even the score.
After both teams stranded runners on base in the eighth and ninth innings,
Ansley Chiang, the international tiebreaking runner, reached third base with one out in the top of the 10
th but was left on base with back-to-back grounders to third. Following a wild pitch that moved Lackey, Chattanooga's tiebreaking runner, to third base, Jones singled up the middle to give the Mocs the victory.
Long, who came on in relief, picked up her second win of the day after holding the Paladins to one earned run on five hits over 5.2 innings. Sophomore
Lily O'Bryan, a native of Cleveland, Tenn., suffered the loss despite limiting the Mocs to one earned run over 3.2 innings of relief.
Annika Segedi went 3-for-5 at the plate and Jones collected two hits for the Mocs. Embler and Peeler each went 3-for-5 with a triple for the Paladins and the duo combined to drive in three runs in the game two loss.
