GREENVILLE, S.C. – When Furman head coach Clay Hendrix references the Paladins' wide receiving corps as the group that has changed the most from a year ago, the numbers back him up.
 
Of the 20 players who populate the unit, over half (11) are newcomers, and within that contingent are three graduate transfers.  That trio will join five returning lettermen in giving the Paladins a group of eight players who Hendrix will look to foremost for production this fall.
 
"A year ago we showed some pretty good things in the wide receiving group, but then we went several games with our top guys out," said Hendrix.  "There were days in the spring when we had four healthy bodies out there, but now it's different with a lot of new faces.  We'll look to get the transfers in there and continue to develop guys, including a couple freshmen who we believe have a chance help us this year."
 
Replacing the production of 2025 Freshman All-American Evan James (65 rec., 796 yds., 7 TDs), now at Iowa, will be a tall task, but the challenge may be best solved in the aggregate, led by Ethan Harris (6-2, 194, R-Sr,), Devin Hester, Jr. (5-9, 176, Jr.), Gram Smithson (5-10, 180, R-Sr.), John Holbrook (6-4, 200, R-So.), and Landyn James (6-1, 190, R-So.).
 
Harris had 21 receptions a year ago and made two starts before being sidelined due to injury.  An 11-catch performance in a 33-21 win over East Tennessee State last year and 41 career grabs tesity to his ability. Hester has 33 catches in his Paladin tenure, which includes a resume of special teams production, and Smithson owns quality field time despite dealing with injuries.  Holbrook, meanwhile, is looking to complete his own return from injury that cost him the entire 2025 campaign, and James hopes to build on notable time earned last year.
 
"We're excited to have Ethan back, and Devin's a third-year guy who has played a lot of football for us.  Gram is a fifth-year guy who is dependable.
 
"John would have been one of our top guys a year ago before injuries took him out.  He's come back, and now it's more about confidence for him than anything.  He's getting better each day.  And Landyn got some quality reps last year after injuries to others created an opportunity for him."
 
The three transfers include Daniel Haughton (6-0, 195, Gr.), Luke Shields (6-0, 180, Gr.), and Dwartney Wortham (6-0, 175, Gr.).
 
Haughton made 17 starts and caught 57 passes for 687 yards and three touchdowns at Dartmouth before an injured Achilles ended his senior season.  Shields saw action in 20 games in two seasons at Tennessee Tech, and Wortham joins the Paladins following an undergraduate career at Central Florida.
 
"We're really excited about Daniel, who has had a productive career.  He appears to be fully recovered from his Achilles injury, and we're doing a little more with him each day.
 
"Luke is a really impressive guy.  I think he will play a significant role.  He takes a lot of pride in everything, including blocking in the run game that doesn't get noticed as much but is a big quality."
 
"Dwartney has been slowed with some back issues, so right now we're just trying to get him well."
 
Connor Morin (5-9, 183, R-Fr.) is a player Hendrix indicates could be primed to join the wide receiving rotation.
 
"Connor is another guy who had a really solid offseason and has looked good in preseason camp.  He's dependable and makes a lot of plays."
 
Others looking to join the competition include Ian Olsen (6-0, 200, R-Fr.), Brooks Whitmer (6-0, 190, R-Jr.), and A'jani Mainer (6-1, 175, Sr.).
 
"Ian's been in the program as couple of years now, and Brooks and A'jani are guys with a lot of fight.  There's a lot of competition in that group."
 
Walker Wood is transitioning to student assistant coach, according to Hendrix.
 
Seven true freshmen are in the wide receivers group — Banks Bouton (6-2, 217, Fr.), Jerrod Williams, Jr. (6-0, 170, Fr.), Jay Duncan (6-3, 167, Fr.), Vernon Stephens (6-0, 205, Fr.), Keldin Wrona (6-1, 185, Fr.), Israel Morgan (6-0, 180, Fr.), and Weston Hughes (6-2, 190, Fr.).
 
Bouton, the son of Furman linebacking great and Hall of Famer Will Bouton (1998-01), is a versatile player who starred at quarterback at Gaffney High School a year ago.
 
"Banks is an impressive player who enrolled in January.  He has spent a good bit of his time at quarterback, and you may see that continue at some point.  He has a big body and is a fast guy who competes well and will be fun to watch.  I think he will be in the mix.
 
"Jerrod is another really impressive freshman and one of the fastest guys on our team.  He's shown he has the ability to figure into the mix and also in the return game.
 
"I think Jay Duncan, who played at Greenwood High School, has a bright future here.  He will continue to develop as he gets bigger and stronger, as will Vernon and Kelvin, who will provide depth."
 
Morgan is the son of former Paladin linebacker Marcus Morgan (1992-95).
 
Hughes will join the team when school starts, and the Paladins expect to get Seth Roach (5-11, 170, R-Fr.), who is coming off a knee injury,  back later in the fall.

Furman kicks off its 2026 season on Thursday, August 27, when it entertains Anderson in a 7:00 p.m. contest at Paladin Stadium.
