Brittany Gaston's two-run walk-off double to right field gave Appalachian State a 4-3 victory over Furman in game one and Ashley Stubbs pitched the Mountaineers to a 6-1 victory in the nightcap as ASU swept a Southern Conference softball doubleheader from the Paladins on Saturday.
Appalachian State improved to 21-23 overall and 12-9 in the SoCon while Furman slipped to 15-24 overall and 7-9 inside the league. Sunday's series finale has been moved from a 1 p.m. start to a noon first pitch due to expected inclement weather.
After Meagan Rembielak reached on a one-out single and Katie Boyd drew her fourth walk of the game in the bottom of the seventh, Gaston hammered a double to the right field wall to score both base runners as Appalachian State rallied for the 4-3 game one victory.
Furman grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second on Meredith Mielke's two-out single before Michelle Lighton delivered a two-run double to put the Mountaineers on top 2-1 in the third inning. Senior Kate Termini put the Paladins back out on top in the top of the sixth with a two-run homer to left, her second of the season.
Rembielak went 2-for-4 with two runs while Lighton and Brittany Gaston each batted in a pair for ASU, Kayla Richardson (11-13) allowed just two earned runs on six hits in seven innings to pick up the victory.
Termini went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Abby Robertson also collected two hits for Furman. Lana Mackey suffered the loss to fall to 8-11. The junior allowed four runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings despite fanning 11 batters.
In game two, Lighton plated a run with a ground out in Appalachian's two-run first, doubled in a run in the third inning and drew a bases loaded walk as part of a three-run outburst in the fourth as ASU cruised to a 6-1 win.
Stubbs (9-9) limited Furman to just one run on four hits in six innings to earn the victory. Boyd drew a pair of walks and added a hit while scoring two runs for the Mountaineers.
Furman's Stephanie Mihaly (6-5) gave up six runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings to absorb the loss. The Paladins' Stephanie Field went 2-for-2 with a double while Termini belted her second homer of the day.
