Powells Point, N.C. – Junior Matt Broome
birdied eight holes on his way to a six-under 66 and sole
possession of third place while Furman posted a three-under 285 to
hold sixth place after 18 holes at the Old Dominion/OBX Collegiate
on Sunday at the par-72 Kilmarlic Golf Club.
Broome, a native of Barrington, R.I., made the turn at even par
before blistering the back nine with six birdies to shoot 30 over
the final nine holes of the first round. After claiming
individual medalist honors in his last event at the Big 5
Invitational in Philadelphia, Pa., Broome notched a sub-70 score
for the third consecutive round. He trails tournament leaders
Max McKay of Liberty and Harold Varner of East Carolina by one
stroke with 36 holes to play.
Junior Anthony Aloi continued his strong play with a first round
two-under par 70. The Plainsboro, N.J., product posted five
birdies on his way to a share of 17th place. Matt Brown
opened the tournament with a 74 while J.B. Murphy eagled a pair of
par fives on his way to a first round 75.
East Carolina, who carded an 18-under 270, holds a six-stroke
lead over second place Liberty with Richmond, William & Mary
and Louisville rounding out the top five ahead of sixth place
Furman.
Second round play at the ODU/OBX Collegiate is set for Monday
morning with final round action slated for Tuesday.
