Broome Blisters Back Nine To Card Opening Round 66 At ODU/OBX Collegiate

Powells Point, N.C. – Junior Matt Broome birdied eight holes on his way to a six-under 66 and sole possession of third place while Furman posted a three-under 285 to hold sixth place after 18 holes at the Old Dominion/OBX Collegiate on Sunday at the par-72 Kilmarlic Golf Club.

Broome, a native of Barrington, R.I., made the turn at even par before blistering the back nine with six birdies to shoot 30 over the final nine holes of the first round.  After claiming individual medalist honors in his last event at the Big 5 Invitational in Philadelphia, Pa., Broome notched a sub-70 score for the third consecutive round.  He trails tournament leaders Max McKay of Liberty and Harold Varner of East Carolina by one stroke with 36 holes to play.

Junior Anthony Aloi continued his strong play with a first round two-under par 70.  The Plainsboro, N.J., product posted five birdies on his way to a share of 17th place.  Matt Brown opened the tournament with a 74 while J.B. Murphy eagled a pair of par fives on his way to a first round 75.

East Carolina, who carded an 18-under 270, holds a six-stroke lead over second place Liberty with Richmond, William & Mary and Louisville rounding out the top five ahead of sixth place Furman.

Second round play at the ODU/OBX Collegiate is set for Monday morning with final round action slated for Tuesday.
