AWENDAW, S.C. -- Furman seniors Clark Akers (-3) and Harris Barth (-3) each fired an opening-round 69 to tie for 17th Sunday at the Hootie Intercollegiate, which is being held at the par 72, 7,282 yard Bulls Bay Golf Club in Awendaw, S.C.
A native of Nashville, Tenn., Akers turned at 1-over then reeled off four birdies and five pars on the back. He finished the day with five birdies, while Barth, who hails from Atlanta, Ga., birdied four of his first six holes, including three-straight holes from No. 4 through No. 6, then added three additional birdies on the back to finish with a team-high seven birdies on the day. The Paladin duo sits five strokes back of individual leader Loran Appel (-8) of Charleston, who carded a 64 on Sunday.Â
Senior Zach Frazer (-1) tallied a 71 with birdies on No. 4 and No. 12 to tie for 36th, while sophomore Ludvig Josefsson (+2) sits in a tie for 70th after shooting a 74 with birdies on No. 6 and No. 9. Redshirt sophomore Walter Anderson (+3) recorded a 75 with birdies on No. 2 and No. 4, tying for 73rd.
Freshman Cameron Reed, who is playing as an individual, enters Monday's second round tied for 53rd. He shot even par with three birdies to open the tournament.
Co-host College of Charleston (-23) smoked the field with a 265 on Sunday. No. 39 Kansas (-18) is five strokes back in second place, while co-host South Carolina (-13), which ranks 43rd is in third place. No. 45 Purdue (-12) is in fourth, while Coastal Carolina (-11) and 37th-ranked Clemson (-11) are tied for fifth. Furman (-5) is tied with Appalachian State (-5) for 11th place in the loaded field, which includes six Power 4 teams.
The 54-hole tournament continues on Monday beginning at 9 a.m. Furman will tee off on No. 10 starting at 9:45 a.m. and will play in a group with Chattanooga and Appalachian State.
