Furman Men's Golf In Eighth After First Round Of Hummingbird Intercollegiate

Sapphire, N.C. – J.B. Murphy carded an even-par 71 on Monday to grab a share of 14th place and help the Furman men's golf team into eighth place after 18 holes at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate at the par-71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley.

Murphy, a native of Columbia, S.C., recorded birdies at No. 6 and No. 12 and posted an eagle at the par-five No. 14 to lead the Paladins to a first round five-over 289.  Junior Anthony Aloi notched a one-over 72 while junior Matt Broome and sophomore Matt Brown each registered a two-over 73.  Redshirt freshman Greg Carrier, playing as an individual, fired an opening round 72 on Monday.

Vanderbilt carded a first round 277 to hold a six-stroke lead over second place Wofford after 18 holes.  Jacksonville, Kentucky and Gardner-Webb rounded out the top five in the 18-team tournament.  The Commodores' Adam Hofmann fired a five-under 66 to hold a one-stroke lead in the individual standings over teammate Trey DelGreco.

Final round action in the Hummingbird Intercollegiate is set for Tuesday morning.
