Mosteller Leads Furman Track & Field Teams In Final Day Of SoCon Championships

BOONE, N.C. -- Sophomore Brooke Mosteller won the 5,000m with a time of 17:56.55 to earn All-SoCon honors and lead the Furman track and field teams on Sunday in the final day of the 2010 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Boone, N.C. Mosteller is also a member of the Furman women's tennis team and has won the 5,000m event in both meets that she has competed this season.

At the meet, the top eight individuals in each event score, while the top three individuals in each event are awarded all-conference accolades. The top three freshmen in each event are named to the Southern Conference All-Freshman team. Mosteller, who is in her first year of eligibility on the Paladin track team, was named to the all-freshman team, in addition to Scott Des Marais in the discus and shot put events, Haley Gray in the Steeplechase, and Jessica Pate in the 10,000m

Junior Monique Ositelu finished fifth in the 800m finals on Sunday, posting a time of 2:15.58. Sophomore Chloe Kowalski placed eighth in the 5,000m event with a time of 18:24.56, followed by senior Brittany Johnson with a time of 18:32.05. Sophomore Charlee Coggins was 24th after posting a time of 19:46.14.

Freshman Emily Wirzba placed tenth overall and third in her heat with a time of 4:57.08 in the 1500m. Junior Jenna Callahan finished 11th in her heat and 23rd overall in the event, turning in a time of 5:06.02. The Paladins' 4x400m relay team of junior Starr Belmont, freshman Misha Holmes, Callahan, and Ositelu placed seventh with a time of 4:00.66.

For the men's team, junior Charlie McGoogan placed eighth in the 5,000m with a time of 15:33.57. Sophomore Lee Gilmer finished eighth in the 1500m with a time of 3:57.37, while freshman Wilkerson Given was fifth in his heat and 16th overall in the event after recording a time of 4:08.88. Furman's 4x400m relay team of freshman Raul Rodriguez, Brian Wilk, Gilmer, and McGoogan was eighth after posting a time of 3:28.26.

In the field events, Des Marais was sixth in the discus with a throw of 137-08 and eleventh in the shot put with a mark of 41-11.25. Sophomore Brian Toney placed 11th in the javelin with a mark of 147-08.

Furman will compete at Georgia on Saturday, May 1.
