Burlington, Iowa – Junior Matt Broome recorded a one-under 71 on Sunday to lead the Furman men's golf team to a 12-over 300 first round and 14th place at the Golfweek Conference Challenge at the par-72 Spirit Hollow Golf Course.
The Iowa Hawkeyes lead the 54-hole tournament by 15 strokes after one round with a 20-under 268 on Sunday. North Carolina State holds second place in the 15-team field at five-under while Baylor and Southeastern Louisiana are tied for third place at three-under par.
Broome birdied three holes, including two of the final five, to grab a share of 13th place and pace the Paladins. Columbia, S.C., native J.B. Murphy shot an opening round 74 while newcomer Johnny Kyger carded a three-over 75.
Second round action in the three-day tournament is set to begin at 9 a.m. on Monday. The Paladins will tee-off from the back nine starting at 9:45.
