Box Score Greenville, S.C. – Caroline and Caitlin Wainright combined to toss a five-hit shutout and lead Appalachian State to a 1-0 victory over Furman in the rubber game of a three-game Southern Conference softball series on Sunday at Pepsi Stadium.
The win improved the Mountaineers to 12-10 overall and 3-3 in league play while Furman fell to 8-17 overall and 1-5 in the SoCon with its eighth loss in its last nine games.
Caroline Wainright hurled 5.2 innings and scattered five hits to up her record to 5-3 in the circle before her older sister tossed 1.1 innings of perfect relief to pick up her first save of the campaign.
The Mountaineers plated the only run of the day in the top of the first. Megan Rembielak, who tallied two hits in the series finale, reached on a one-out bunt single and scored from first when Meghan Smith followed with a triple into the right-center field gap.
Furman starter Lakyn Shull stranded runners on third base in each of the first two innings and provided her on offense with a double, but took the loss to fall to 4-5. The freshman allowed only five hits while walking two and fanning four batters in seven innings.
The Paladins return to action when they host the Presbyterian College Blue Hose in a 3 p.m doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Pepsi Stadium.
