Ferrara, Austin Help Furman Finish Off Wofford, 69-65

Box Score

Greenville, S.C. – Senior Bobby Austin's three-pointer with 17 seconds left closed the door on a Wofford comeback as Furman topped the Terriers, 69-65, in Southern Conference men's basketball action Monday night on YP.com Court at Timmons Arena.

The win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Paladins and improved Furman to 4-11 overall and 1-3 in SoCon play.  Wofford dropped to 7-10 overall and 1-3 in the league.

With Furman leading 61-54 and under five minutes to play, Spencer Collins converted in the paint and Karl Cochran drained a three following a Paladin turnover to bring the Terriers within two at 61-59.  Charlie Reddick responded with a trey on Furman's next possession, but Collins answered with two free throws and scored on an offensive rebound to trim the margin to 64-63 with 1:58 remaining.

After a shot clock violation on the Paladins and a Wofford turnover, Reddick hit 1-of-2 free throws to put the Paladins ahead 65-63 at the 1:07 mark.  Cochran worked off of a screen on Wofford's next possession to attempt a go-ahead three, but Reddick rebounded the miss and Bobby Austin buried a trey from the right wing with 17 seconds to play as the shot clock expired to boost the Paladin advantage to 68-63.

Collins scored on a driving layup on the other end with 9.8 second left before Stephen Croone was fouled on the inbounds pass and made the front end of a one-and-one opportunity with 9.4 seconds to play on the other end to seal Furman's first victory over Wofford since January 24, 2010.

Freshman Kendrec Ferrara paced the Paladins with a career-high 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting while fellow freshman Larry Wideman added 11 points and senior Bryant Irwin contributed 10 points.

The Paladins, who shot a season-best 58.1% from the field and converted on 10-of-18 three-point attempts, buried their first four attempts from long range while sprinting out to a 22-8 lead on Irwin's layup with 11:49 to play in the first half.  Wofford cut the lead back to eight points, but Ferrara answered with four straight points and Wideman capped the half and an 11-4 run with a three-pointer to send the Paladins into the locker room leading 40-25.

Furman led by 14 with 16:30 left before Wofford's Lee Skinner finished with a slam on a fast break and Colin Reddick, the Paladins' leading scorer, was forced to leave the game with a deep gash over his left eye.  The Terriers took advantage of the forward's absence by fashioning a 15-8 run, capped by Cochran's triple with 8:50 remaining, to bring Wofford to within five at 52-47 and set up a dramatic finish.

Collins led Wofford with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting while Cochran scored 17 points despite shooting just 7-of-22 from the field, including 3-for-13 from three-point range.  Skinner added 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Wofford shot 43.3% from the field, but managed to connect on just 5-of-22 treys.  The Terriers out-rebounded Furman 32-25 on the strength of 16 offensive boards.

Furman, which overcame 19 turnovers, got nine points and six assists from Croone in addition to its three double figure scorers.  Colin Reddick tallied eight points while Charlie Reddick netted eight points to go with a game-high nine rebounds.

Furman begins a three-game road trip on Thursday when it faces the Elon Phoenix at Alumni Gym.
