Furman Falters Late Against UNCG, Loses 60-59

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Ebona Goins connected on a free throw with 12 seconds remaining to give UNC Greensboro a one-point lead and the Spartans held on to beat Furman, 60-59, in Southern Conference women's basketball play Monday evening at Fleming Gymnasium.

The win improves UNCG to 6-19 overall and 3-13 in SoCon play while Furman, which dropped its third straight, falls to 10-15 overall and 6-10 in league action.

After giving UNCG the lead the charity toss, Goins missed a second free throw opportunity but teammate Janae' Stevenson pulled down the rebound, and Furman was forced to foul.  The Spartans' Lucy Mason failed to convert the front end of the one-and-one opportunity, leaving the Paladins with one last possession.  Furman, however, couldn't convert as Kaitlin Murphy's shot under heavy pressure didn't come close as time expired.

UNCG won the game by erasing a 47-36 deficit following a layup by Furman's Janice Roberts with 11:35 remaining.

Trailing 51-42 with 9:45 to go, the Spartans used a 6-0 run to cut it to 51-48 on a steal and layup by Jessica Collins at the 7:45 mark.

Furman led 57-52 after a Holli Wilkins basket with 4:05 remaining, but UNCG tied it at 57-57 following baskets by Goins, Stevenson, and a free throw by Collins with 2:43 showing on the clock.

Two free throws by Brittany Hodges put Furman up 59-57 at the 1:31 mark, but Goins and UNCG quickly tied it with a layup 18 seconds later.

The Paladins turned the ball over on their next two trips down the floor, setting up the game deciding possession for UNCG, which ended with Goins' draining the front end of a two-shot free throw opportunity with 12 ticks on the clock.

Teshia Griswold and Hodges paced Furman with 13 points apiece, and Wilkins continued her solid late season play with a 12-point performance.

Goins topped the Spartans with 10 points, followed by Stevenson and Mason with 10 each.

Furman shot a solid 48.9 percent from the field, connecting on 23-of-47 shots, but the Paladins attempted 12 fewer shots than UNCG due in large measure to 20 costly turnovers.

The Paladins trailed 32-29 at intermission but opened the second half with an 8-0 burst to take a 37-32 lead on a Hodges basket two minutes in.  The advantage grew to as many as 11 points at 47-36 before UNCG mounted its comeback.

Furman plays three of its final four games at home beginning Saturday when it entertains Elon in a 2:00 p.m. contest at Timmons Arena.
