Box Score Boone, N.C. – Senior Allie Cashion drove in four runs, including a two-run single to break a 3-3 tie in the fourth inning, to lead Appalachian Stat to a 5-3 victory over Furman and series sweep of the Paladins in Southern Conference softball action on Sunday afternoon at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium.
The Mountaineers improved to 24-16 overall and 16-5 in SoCon play while upping their home record to 14-0. Furman dropped its sixth straight game to fall to 22-24 overall and 7-10 in the league.
Caroline Rogers singled through the left side with one out in the bottom of the fourth and Pepper Butler moved her to second with a base on balls. Furman reliever Shelby Parker got Sarah Warnock to pop up to shortstop for the second out and pinch hitter Ellie Manriquez hit a soft grounder to shortstop for the would-be third out, but Sieara Bishop bobbled the ball to load the bases. Lindsay Loudermilk was hit by an 0-1 pitch to force in the tying run and Cashion followed with a two-run single to right field to put the Mountaineers on top for good.
Alissa Schoelkopf picked up the win for the Mountaineers, allowing three runs on six hits in six innings of work. She walked three batters and recorded five strikeouts to up her record to 16-9. Shivaun Landeros retired the Paladins in order in the seventh inning to secure her second save of the weekend.
Appalachian State grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first as Warnock was hit by a pitch, Dani Heichen reached on a bunt single and both runners scored on Cashion's two-run single.
Natalie Clemmons two-out, RBI double in the top of the third drove in Nikki Legg to trim the lead in half and Furman pulled ahead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Ambree Muller drew a one-out walk before Taylor Jenkins and Bishop delivered back-to-back singles to load the bases. Muller sprinted home on a wild pitch by Schoelkopf to tie the game and the Paladins grabbed the lead as Jenkins scored on Hannah Pace's squeeze bunt.
Parker (4-7), who tossed four innings in relief of starter Meaghan Houston took the loss. She allowed three runs, all unearned, on four hits while striking out three batters.
Bishop went 2-for-4 at the plate and Clemmons notched her second double of the weekend. Cashion finished 2-for-4 with four RBI for Appalachian State while Heichen went 2-for-3 and scored a pair of runs.
Furman returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Orangeburg, S.C., to face South Carolina State in the Paladins' final non-conference doubleheader of the season. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
