Box Score BOONE, N.C. -- Maryah Sydnor scored all 14 of her points in the second half, including the final six for Appalachian State, which held off Furman, 75-70, in women's Southern Conference basketball action Monday evening at the Holmes Center.
The win was the fourth straight for Appalachian State (9-12, 6-5 SoCon), which earned the season series split with Furman (12-10, 6-5 SoCon) in the final league meeting between the two long-gime SoCon foes. The Mountaineers will begin play in the Sunbelt Conference next year.
Sydnor, the SoCon's leading scorer entering the game, failed to connect on all eight of her shots in the first half, but the Mountaineers still managed a 34-31 lead at intermission. The junior forward's shooting struggles continued in the second half as she converted only three of nine attempts, but she managed to get to the free throw line, converting 8-of-12 free throws, including six over the game's final 30 seconds, while also collecting 10 rebounds.
Furman, which dropped its fourth straight road game, got a game high 20-point, 14-rebound effort from Brittany Hodges and 17-point performance from Holli Wilkins, but poor shooting from 3-point range by the Paladins (1-for-13) proved costly. Furman made 26-of-68 shots from the field (38.2 percent).
Appalachian State shot 42.9 percent from the field (27-of-63).
Whitney Bunn and Sarah Durdaller rounded out the Paladins' double figure scoring effort with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Mountaineers also placed four players in double figures, led by Keke Cooper's 16 points. Bria Huffman followed with 15 points, Sydnor with 14, and Katie Mallow with 14 points.
Appalachian State stretched its three-point halftime advantage to seven points on three occasions in the second half, taking a 54-47 lead on a Cooper layup at the 10:27 mark.
Furman battled back to get within one at 61-60 on a Wilkins jump shot with 6:15 to go.
Two Durdaller free throws tied the game at 65-65 with three minutes left. After a Cooper basket, Hodges made one of two free throws to pull the Paladins to within a point, but the Mountaineers held off the Paladins by scoring their final eight points at the free throw line.
Furman wraps up its three-game road stretch on Saturday at Wofford in a 2:00 p.m. contest.
