Furman Falls To Elon, 65-55

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Jenifer Rhodes scored 19 points and Elon used a strong third quarter to help beat Furman, 65-55, in women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Timmons Arena.

Rhodes, a junior forward, connected on 9-of-14 shots and added a free throw for her 19 points to pace the Phoenix (5-2), which claimed its second consecutive win over the Paladins (5-3).

Shay Burnett followed Rhodes with 13 points and a team high eight rebounds, helping Elon to forge a 47-33 advantage on the boards.

Furman's Holli Wilkins led all scorers with 23 points, and Whitney Bunn finished with 14 points.  Cierra Carter recorded her second consecutive double-double with 12 points and game high 12 rebounds.

With the game tied, Elon took advantage of a Furman turnover with eight seconds remaining in the first half to grab a 30-28 lead after Rhodes scored off an offensive rebound as time expired.

It remained a tight contest in the third quarter until Rhodes coverted a layup to put Elon up 41-39 with 4:17 to go, igniting an 11-2 finish by Phoenix that Rhodes capped with a her third basket of the period, a layup with 23 remaining for a 51-41 lead.

Furman clawed back, using a 10-4 run to make it 55-51 following a Carter three-point play at the 5:26 juncture, but Elon answered with another Rhodes layup and Autumn Carter jump shot on its next two possessions to push the advantage to 59-51.

A Wilkins 3-pointer made it 59-55 with four minutes to go, but the Paladins failed to score the rest of the way.

The Phoenix shot 37.3 percent for the game, hitting on 22-of-59 shots.  Furman, meanwhile, was limited to just 31.6 percent shooting (18-of-57).

Elon's Maddie McCallie drilled a pair of 3-pointers in the decisive third quarter to finish with nine points.

Furman plays at Georgia on Tuesday in an 11:00 a.m. contest, part of Education Day for the Bulldogs.
