Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Whitney Bunn poured in 26 points and Holli Wilkins scored all 16 of her points in the second half to help Furman claim a 70-61 victory over Wofford in Southern Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Ben Johnson Arena.
The win, Furman's fifth straight against its Upstate rival, improves the Paladins to 9-9 on the season and to 2-1 in SoCon play. Wofford falls to 5-11 overall and 0-3 in league action.
Bunn, a junior All-SoCon guard, was nearly flawless as a shooter, draining 9-of-10 field goal attempts, including all four 3-point attempts and each of her four free throws, to headline Furman's 50.0 percent shooting effort (24-for-48). The Paladins, who entered the game as the SoCon's top 3-point shooting squad, carved up the Terriers from beyond the arc, ripping the cords on 11-of-17 treys for a season best 64.7 percent clip.
Wilkins, Furman's leading scorer on the season (13.3 ppg), failed to scratch in the scoring column over the game's first 20 minutes but came back in a big way in the second half, scoring 11 points in the third quarter in helping the Paladins erase a six-point halftime deficit and send the game into the fourth quarter tied at 47-47.
In the final period Cierra Carter's 3-pointer with 8:39 to go knotted it at 50-50 and ignited an 11-0 run that turned the game around for Furman.
Kelsey Ellis, who scored 14 points, gave the Paladins their first lead of the second half with a 3-pointer with just under eight minutes remaining and followed it with a fast break layup off a Bunn pass for a 55-50 advantage. Bunn then capped the decisive spurt with her final 3-pointer of the contest, with 6:35 to go, to stretch the lead to 58-50.
A Holli Wilkins baseline trey with 2:21 put Furman up 64-55.
Wofford cut the advantage to 65-61 on a pair of free throws from Ashton Fleming with 38 seconds on the clock, but Bunn sealed it, tallying four of the Paladins' final five points at the free throw line.
The Terriers were paced in scoring by Ashton Fleming's 13 points. Maria Corella finished with 11 points, and Kentra Washington tallied 10.
Wofford, which shot just 33.8 percent (22-for-65), edged Furman on the boards, 38-32. Tiara Wood led the Paladins on the glass with seven caroms — her second highest tally of the season.
Wilkins' 16-point performance increased her career tally to 1,337 points and moved her into to eighth place on Furman's all-time scoring ledger.
Bunn, meanwhile, continued her march to 1,000 points, upping her career tally to 941 points. She recently moved into third place on the school's all-time assists ledger, and now has 394 dishes following her seven-assist effort versus Wofford.
The Paladins play Wednesday at Western Carolina.
