Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. – Strong singles play propelled Furman past Presbyterian, 4-3, in men's tennis action Friday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C. After dropping the doubles point, the Paladins put together four-consecutive singles wins for the team victory.
The Blue Hose claimed the opening point with wins in the top two doubles positions. Ben Kelley and Joel Roberts teamed up to defeat junior Adam Steryous and sophomore Cameron Green, 6-3, at flight one, and Danny Bruce and Brandon Mills handed seniors Matt Browne and Ben Horst a 6-4 loss at flight two. The flight three match was unfinished.
Furman won four-straight singles matches in straight sets, as Adam Steryous beat Bruce, 6-2, 6-2, in the top-flighted match, and Green topped Diego Manzanas, 6-1, 6-4, at number three. Horst posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Roberts at flight four, and sophomore Josh Pistorius beat Mills, 6-3, 6-2, at flight five.
Presbyterian scored the final two points of the match, as Kelley recorded a 6-4, 6-4 win against freshman Alex Steryous at number six, and Alejandro Bejar held on for a 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (12-10) decision over Browne at flight two.
"Our team was tested today against a competitive Presbyterian program," said Furman head coach Kelly Jones. "I am really proud of how the guys responded after losing the doubles point. Everyone was committed to finding a way to be successful."
Furman (1-2) hits the road next weekend, as the Paladins play at Liberty Friday at 2 p.m. then square off against Virginia in Charlottesville Saturday at 1 p.m.
