Box Score DURHAM, N.C. – 54th-ranked Duke swept the singles matches to defeat Furman, 6-1, Saturday at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in Durham, N.C.
The Paladins claimed the doubles point after winning two of three matches. Seniors Matt Browne and Ben Horst teamed up to beat Nicolas Alvarez and Ryan Dickerson, 6-3, at flight one, then the Blue Devils' Catalin Mateas and Vincent Lin posted a 7-5 victory over sophomore Cameron Green and freshman Alex Steryous at flight two. In the decisive flight three match-up, sophomore Josh Pistorius and junior Adam Steryous downed Daniel McCall and Jason Lapidus, 7-6(2).
In singles play, 15th-ranked Alvarez notched a 6-3, 6-3 win versus Adam Steryous in the top-seeded contest, and Mateas defeated Browne, 6-3, 6-2, at flight two. Lin topped Green, 6-4, 6-3, at number three, and T.J. Pura recorded a 7-5, 6-2 advantage over Horst at flight four. In the flight five match-up, Dickerson beat Pistorius, 6-3, 6-0, and at flight six, McCall came from behind for a 6-7(4), 6-3, 1-0(10-7) victory versus Alex Steryous.
Furman (3-6) will entertain USC Upstate Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center.
