Box Score Greenville, S.C. -- Virginia pounded out 13 hits and took advantage of four Furman errors to down the Paladins 9-1 in five innings in the finale of the Spartan Classic on Sunday afternoon at Pepsi Stadium.
The Cavaliers (6-9) jumped out to the early lead by plating three runs in both the first and second innings. In the first, Allie Arneson blooped a single to right field that landed between the second baseman and right fielder and she moved to second when the ball skipped by both Paladins. Katie Park singled to drive in Arneson, Danni Ingraham singled and Kaitlin Fitzgerald followed with a third consecutive single that drove in a run. A second run scored on the play due to a Paladin throwing error.
In the second inning, Virginia loaded the bases with two singles and a base on balls before Park lined a two-run single to right-center. Ingraham's sacrifice fly extended the Cavalier lead to 6-0. Virginia added an unearned run in the third off reliever Emily Demonte before Furman (7-9) got on the board on Emma Ogburn's double off of the centerfielder's glove at the wall in the bottom of the fourth.
The Cavaliers added two runs in the fifth to trigger the mercy rule.
Erika Osherow (4-7) held Furman to just one run on three hits over five innings to earn the victory, while Furman's Lindsey Bert (4-6) allowed five earned runs on seven hits in two innings to absorb the loss.
Arneson went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and four other Cavaliers collected two hits apiece for Virginia.
Furman returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to USC Upstate for a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Cyrill Stadium.
