Three-Run Sixth Inning Helps Coastal Carolina Rally Past Furman, 3-1

Box Score

Conway, S.C. -- Annie Robinson's two-out, two-run blast in the bottom of the sixth inning capped a Coastal Carolina rally and lifted the Chanticleers to a 3-1 victory over Furman in the finale of the Chanticleer Challenge on Sunday afternoon.

After five scoreless frames, Furman (13-14) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning when Candace Johnson singled, stole second base and scored on Elise Smith's two-out single through the right side.

Coastal Carolina's Bri Chiusano opened the bottom of the sixth with an infield single and took second on an errant throw before Taty Forbes put runners on the corners with another infield hit. Morgan Noad lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to plate the tying run. Furman starter Lindsey Bert fanned Kelsey Dominik for the second out of the inning, but Robinson followed by depositing an 0-1 pitch over the center field fence to give the Chanticleers (11-13) a 3-1 lead.

With one out in the seventh inning, Taylor Collins was plunked by a Dominik pitch. Pinch hitter Hannah Reynolds lined a single into right-center to put the tying run on base, but Dominik got pinch hitter Andrea Abbatiello and Johnson to fly out to left field to end the rally.

Dominik limited the Paladins to just one run on four hits over seven innings. She walked three batters and struck out six while improving to 6-7 in the circle.

Bert (6-10), who matched a career-high with 10 strikeouts, took the loss for Furman. The sophomore allowed three runs on five hits over six innings.

Forbes finished 2-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases to pace the Coastal Carolina offense, while Johnson went 2-for-3 with a couple of singles and a base on balls for the Paladins.

Furman returns home to host Gardner-Webb in a 4 p.m. doubleheader at Pepsi Stadium on Wednesday. Live statistics for Wednesday's games game be accessed by logging onto FurmanPaladins.com. Fans can follow in-game updates on Twitter by following @FurmanSoftball.
