Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Cierra Carter scored 19 points and Kaitlyn Duncan contributed a career high 15 points to power Furman past Wofford, 65-60, in Southern Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Timmons Arena.
The win was the eighth straight for the Paladins (13-13, 6-4 SoCon) against the Terriers (12-13, 2-8 SoCon) and improved Furman to 25-0 all-time against Wofford in Greenville.
"I'm extremely proud of everybody's effort today," said Furman head coach Jackie Carson, who improved to 13-1 against Wofford. "They are a tough team, and we knew it would be a battle but when we needed a stop at the end of the game, we got it. Kaitlyn and Cierra ignited our offense, but it was definitely a team effort with everyone in new roles."
Both Carter and Duncan combined their scoring exploits with 11 rebounds apiece to complete double-doubles. Duncan's performance, which she spiced with six blocks, topped her previous career high of 13 points registered last year against Appalachian State.
Trailing 54-43 after three periods, Wofford got a game high 28 points, including 18 in the second half, from Choloe Wanink, who converted 6-of-13 3-pointers and almost single-handedly helped the Terriers overcome the 11-point deficit with nine points in the final period.
A Carter 3-pointer two minutes into the fourth quarter gave the Paladins a 57-45 lead — their biggest of the contest — after which the Terriers used an 8-0 run, capped by a pair of Grayson Pinholster baskets, to make it a 57-53 game with 4:35 to go.
Wanink followed a Paladin turnover with her final 3-pointer of the game with 1:12 remaining to cut Furman's lead to 61-60, but that's as close as the Terriers would get as Furman's Le'Jzae Davidson was fouled with 15 seconds to go and sent to the free throw line, where she converted both chances to put the Paladins up, 63-60.
Wanink's game-tying 3-point shot from the extended right wing bounced hard off the opposite side of the rim into the hands of Duncan. Carter was then fouled and sealed with game by draining two free throws with three seconds remaining.
Similar to its start against the Terriers in Spartanburg on Jan. 14, where Furman rallied impressively from an 11-0 deficit en route to a 69-49 win, the Paladins fell behind 19-7 in the first period before closing with an 11-0 run, finished off by a Davidson buzzer beating layup to trail, 19-18, after one.
A Carter layup put the Paladins ahead for good, 22-21, and an Allison Beasley trey made it 25-21 at the 6:14 mark.
Out-hustled on the boards early, Furman responded to post a 38-34 advantage on the glass while shooting 45.3 percent from the field (24-for-53). Davidson rounded out Furman's double digit scoring trio with 14 points, and junior Stephanie Oramas contributed six points with six assists in a season high 31 minutes of playing time.
The Paladins return to action next Thursday when they entertain Samford in a 7:00 p.m. game.
