Lipscomb Edges Furman At Unconquered Invitational, 2-1

Tallahassee, Fla. -- Caitlin Plocheck belted a two-run homer and Mandy Jordan tossed a complete game to lead Lipscomb to a 2-1 victory over Furman at Florida State's Unconquered Invitational on Saturday in Tallahassee, Fla.

With two outs and a runner on base in the bottom of the first, Plocheck deposited an Emily Demonte pitch over the left-center field wall for the Bisons' (1-2) only runs of the ball game.

Jordan, 1-1 on the season, held Furman to just one run on three hits while fanning seven batters and issuing two walks.

Furman grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first. Junior Carolina Cash, 2-for-3 on the day, doubled to start the game, moved to third base on a wild pitch and scored on Candace Johnson's grounder to shortstop.

Down 2-1 in the fourth, the Paladins looked to have tied the game when Hannah Seaver scored from first on Kalie Hicks' line drive double down the left field line, but Seaver was called out for leaving first base early which also erased the double. Furman threatened again in the sixth inning as Johnson was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. AnnaRose Borrelli lined a two-out single to left field, but Kasey Gibson's throw to the plate cut down Johnson to end the frame.

Demonte, who allowed two runs on five hits in 1.2 innings, suffered the loss for Furman. Senior Elise Smith tossed 4.1 scoreless innings of relief for the Paladins, while allowing just one hit.

Furman (0-3) returns to action in the tournament semifinals at 4 p.m. against either Marshall or Florida State.
