Pitching Powers Furman Softball To Sweep On Saturday In Buffalo Wild Wings Classic, 8-0, 5-0

Furman 8, Howard 0 (5 inn.)

Furman 5, Delaware State 0

Greenville, S.C. -- Sophomore Emily Demonte and junior Lindsey Bert hurled back-to-back one-hit, shutouts to lead Furman to victories over Howard and Delaware State on Saturday afternoon in the Buffalo Wild Wings Classic at Pepsi Stadium.

Furman 8, Howard 0 (5 inn.)

Demonte, a right-hander from Sumter, S.C., started the day by carrying a no-hitter into the top of the fifth before a two-out single spoiled her near perfect day. The Paladin hurler retired the next batter to end the game by mercy rule as the Paladins claimed an 8-0 win.

AnnaRose Borrelli put the Paladins in front with a solo homer in the second inning, her third of the season, before Furman struck for five runs in the third inning. Lauren Duggar reached on an error and Hannah Seaver walked before Bert lined a two-run double into right-center. Borrelli's single plated Bert for the third run of the frame and Tess Griswold drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Brittany Houston reached base on a two-out error to score pinch runner Sarah Windham.

Furman (8-8) added a pair of runs on wild pitches in the fourth and Demonte (2-4) cruised to her second win of the season. She issued just one walk and fanned five batters over five innings. Borrelli finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, while Seaver and Caroline Nageotte each scored two runs.

Howard's Alexa Walker took the loss to fall to 0-1. She allowed six runs, just three earned, on five hits in three innings.

Furman 5, Delaware State 0

Furman capped tournament play with another outstanding pitching effort from Bert in a 5-0 win over Delaware State.

Like Demonte, Bert allowed just a single with two outs in the final inning. She struck out six batters over seven innings and allowed only one walk to move to 5-4 on the season.

Furman got all the offense it would need in the third and fourth innings. Bert and Borrelli set the table with singles in the third before both scored on Casey Bigham's double into the gap and a throwing error by the Hornets. Sophomore Taylor Vahle opened the fourth with a solo homer to left field and Courtney Jacobs upped the lead to 5-0 with a two-run single after Duggar and Windham recorded safeties.

Tara Tursellino (0-2) took the loss for Delaware State allowing five runs on nine hits in four innings.

Bigham went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles for the Paladins, while Jacobs collected two hits and drove in a pair of runs.

Furman returns to action next weekend when it co-hosts the Upstate Classic at Pepsi Stadium. Action will take place Firday, Saturday and Sunday on the Furman campus with Radford, Canisius, Dayton and Youngstown State visiting Furman.
