Furman Powers Past Mount St. Mary's for First Win of 2017

Emmitsburg, Md. – Ten Paladins combined for 14 goals as Furman's offense powered past Mount St. Mary's, 14-7, for the Paladins' first win of 2017. The loss drops the Mountaineers to 0-4.

Jonah Moore led the Paladins with four points (1 G, 3 A), while Lou Yovino added a hat trick. David Williamson and William Holcomb each tallied two goals and six other Paladins scored one. Hil Blaze won a season-high 17 faceoffs and picked up a team-high five ground balls. The Paladins held Mount St. Mary's to just 9-15 on clear attempts on the day.

Furman opened up a quick lead as Blaze won the game's opening faceoff and scored his first goal of the season just 12 seconds in to the first. Yovino then netted his first goal of the day on an assist by Wierzbicki to push the Paladin lead to 2-0 just under four minutes into the game. Mount St. Mary's responded with an extra man goal, but Furman used back-to-back goals by Zach Scott and Graham Dabbs to push the lead to 4-1 with just under five minutes to go in the period. The Mount netted back-to-back goals of its own to cut the lead to 4-3, but Yovino scored his second goal of the day to give the Furman the 5-3 lead to end the first period.

The Paladins' defense held Mount St. Mary's scoreless in the second period, while the offense tallied five goals to double the lead and give Furman the 10-3 advantage heading into halftime.

Furman continued to add to its lead in the third, opening the period with Holcomb's second goal of the day, before Mount St. Mary's finally ended the run and cut the lead to 11-4 with 9:13 to go in the third. Furman responded with three-straight goals, including the first scores of the season for Joe Stone and Chad Kreuzer to take a 14-4 lead after three.

Mount St. Mary's kept the Paladins off the board in the fourth, but couldn't overcome the deficit, scoring three times to cut the Furman lead to 14-7.

The Mount was led on offense by Bubba Johnson with two goals, while, Matt Vierheller and Cameron Carpenter split time in goal, combining for 11 saves.

Furman is back in action on Saturday, March 4, welcoming Michigan to Paladin Stadium for a 1:00 p.m. matchup.
