Women's Lacrosse Falls to Vanderbilt

Greenville, S.C. – Vanderbilt used seven points each from Kayla Peterson and Jill Doherty to down Furman, 18-8, on Sunday afternoon inside Paladin Stadium. The win moves the Commodores to 2-1 on the season, while the loss drops the Paladins to 1-2. 

Furman was led by Abby Shields with four points (3 G, 1 A) and Meg Lingo with three (2 G, 1A). Haley Gray and Devon Horine each won three draws, while Horine added two caused turnovers and three ground balls. Maggie Friel played all 60 minutes in goal for the Paladins, saving a school-record and career-high 17 shots.

Vanderbilt opened the scoring just under four minutes into the game, before the Paladins responded with Lingo's first goal of the day at the 23:10 mark of the first half. The Commodores then went on a 5-0 run over the next seven minutes, pushing the lead to 6-1 before Lingo found Shields for her first goal of the day to cut the lead to 6-2. Lingo scored again for the Paladins to cut the lead to 6-3, before Vanderbilt ended the first half with back-to-back goals to take an 8-3 lead into halftime.

The Commodores pushed the lead to 10-3 in the first three minutes of the second half, before Horine netted the Paladins' a free-position attempt to cut the lead to 10-4.  After Vanderbilt stretched the lead to 11-4, Furman got back-to-back goals by Sophie Brennan and Shields to pull to within five at 11-6. Vanderbilt responded with three-straight goals, however, to take a 14-6 lead with 12:27 go to. Ashley Trice netted her fifth goal of the season at the 11:31 mark to cut the lead in half, then Shields completed her hat trick on a free position attempted to cut the Vanderbilt lead to 14-8. The Commodores then ended the game on a 4-0 scoring run to down the Paladins, 18-8.

Furman is back in action on Sunday, March 5, traveling to Johns Hopkins for a 1:00 p.m. matchup.
