Grand Slam Lifts Albany Over Furman In Puerto Rico Classico, 5-2

Guaynabo, P.R. -- Elizabeth Snow went 3-for-3 with a go-ahead grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning to lead Albany to a 5-2 victory over Furman on Friday morning in the Puerto Rico Classico at Rivera Softball Park in Guaynabo, P.R.

Furman grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning as Courtney Jacobs doubled and scored on Lindsey Bert's RBI single back up the middle. An AnnaRose Borrelli single and Kalie Hicks walk loaded the bases before Casey Bigham worked a bases loaded walk to force in the second run.

Sophomore Emily Demonte held the Great Danes off the board until the bottom of the fifth when she plunked the leadoff batter before issuing a walk to Shaye Swiatek. A one-out single loaded the bases and Donna Conrad put Albany on the board with a soft liner up the middle. Snow followed with a bases clearing blast to left field to give the Great Danes the 5-2 lead.

Caroline Cash doubled to open the seventh inning for Furman and the Paladins got the tying run to the plate when Borrelli drew a two-out walk, but Albany's Celeste Verdolivo got Hicks looking at strike three to end the game. Verdolivo (3-2) struck out six batters in seven innings, while allowing two runs on eight hits.

Demonte (3-6) suffered the loss by allowing five runs on eight hits in six innings. She fanned eight batters and walked two.

Snow finished 3-for-3 with a double, homer and four RBIs. Cash and Jacobs each collected two hits for Furman, including a pair of doubles from Jacobs.
