Furman Softball Blanks Colgate In Season-Opening Doubleheader 7-0, 7-0

Greenville, S.C. -- Lindsey Bert and Emily Demonte tossed back-to-back 7-0 shutouts to lead Furman to a doubleheader sweep of Colgate on Friday afternoon at Pepsi Stadium.

In the home opener, Bert (1-1) hurled a complete-game, one-hitter to earn her first victory of the season and added her first homer of the season to lead the Paladins to the 7-0 triumph.

The senior fanned four batters and allowed just two walks over seven innings to improve to 1-1 on the season.

Furman got on the board in the second inning on AnnaRose Borrelli's RBI double and added a second run when pinch runner Hannah Seaver scored on a Colgate error. Emma Ogburn delivered a two-out RBI double over the leftfielder's head in the bottom of the fourth before Bert cracked an opposite field homer to up the margin to 4-0 in the fifth.

Candace Johnson followed Hannah Reynold's leadoff single with an RBI double in the sixth and scored on Emma Ogburn's sacrifice fly. Taylor Vahle capped the three-run rally with an RBI single to plate Borrelli.

Lauren Duggar went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases in the home opener, while Reynolds finished 3-for-3 and Johnson registered two hits.

Belia Crow (0-1) suffered the loss for Colgate allowing seven runs on 10 hits over five-plus innings.

In the nightcap, Demonte limited the Raiders to just four hits over seven innings to improve to 3-0 on the season with her first shutout of the campaign.

Furman's offense took care of the rest scoring three runs in the first and adding three more in the bottom of the third inning. Duggar reached on a leadoff single in the first and scored on Bert's RBI double to center. Reynolds followed two batters later with a two-run clout to left field to give the Paladins a 3-0 advantage.

In the third, Borrelli delivered an RBI double down the third base line and Furman took advantage of three Colgate errors to score three runs. A sacrifice fly by Johnson in the fourth capped the scoring.

Duggar and Borrelli finished with two hits apiece, while Ogburn doubled and drew a pair of walks. Baillie Jorth collected two hits for the Raiders.

Kyle Griswold (0-1) took the loss for Colgate after surrendering seven runs on seven hits in six innings of work. She walked six batters and notched four strikeouts. Demonte walked two and fanned three in en route to the victory.

Furman is scheduled to play Fairfield in a 1 p.m.. doubleheader on Saturday at Pepsi Stadium before capping the weekend with an 11:00 a.m. contest versus the Stags on Sunday.

NOTE: Furman's doubleheader at Presbyterian, originally scheduled for this past Wednesday, has been rescheduled for 2 p.m. on Wednesday, February 21, in Clinton, S.C.
