Greenville, S.C. – Nicole Mack and
Neci Harris both finished with double-digit kills on Friday evening as the Furman volleyball team fell 3-0 (22-25, 24-26, 25-27) to the Wofford Terriers in SoCon action from Alley Gymnasium.
Furman falls to 0-14 on the season and 0-3 in conference play while Wofford improves to 9-8 overall and 2-1 in the league.
The Terriers opened the first set on a 5-1 run and took a four-point lead on a Chasidy Sharpe service ace. The Paladins came back by scoring seven of the next 12 points and trailed 10-8 when Mack connected on a kill. Furman kept its deficit at three points, 16-13, following a Wofford attack error. The Terriers would then go on a 7-2 run and led 23-15 after back-to-back Emily Durham service aces. The Paladins rallied with a 7-1 run of its own capped by a
Courtney Hoffman solo block to put the score at 24-22. Wofford captured the set on the following play.
The Terriers started the second set by scoring six of the initial seven points and went in front 6-1 on a Furman attack error. The Paladins responded with a 7-3 run and were down 9-8 after a bad set by Wofford. Mack then tied the score several plays later at 15-15 with her kill. With the score even at 17-17, Furman recorded five of the next eight points to take a 22-20 lead on
Gabby Howard's kill.
Lydia Morris then put the Paladins at set point, 24-23, after her kill. The Terriers would score the final three points of the set to win, 26-24.
The third set featured eight ties and four lead changes. The teams traded the first 10 points as the score sat tied at 5-5 after a Furman attack error. The Paladins had taken the lead on the previous play with a Wofford attack error. Furman never trailed by more than four points after that and got to within two several times with the last coming at 22-20. The Terriers held a 20-16 advantage following a kill by Meghan Yaffa. The Paladins responded by going on a 7-2 run and took a 23-22 lead late after a combination block by Harris and Howard. The teams exchanged the next three points before Harris gave Furman a 25-24 lead with her kill. Wofford scored the final three points to capture the set, 27-25, and match, 3-0.
Mack and Harris combined for 24 kills to lead the Paladins offensively as Mack finished with a match-high 14 and Harris 10.
Katie Murphy dished out 36 assists while
Sarah Turner contributed 11 digs.
Yaffa and Catie Cronister compiled a team-leading 11 kills each for the Terriers. Lorissa King dished out 35 assists while Durham tallied 12 digs.
Furman concludes its five-match homestand on Saturday evening when it hosts The Citadel at 6 p.m.
