Men's Basketball Celebrates New Year With Wednesday Matinee At VMI

Tip-Off On New Year's Day Set For 1 P.M.

Greenville, S.C. – The Furman men's basketball team goes for its fifth straight win and a 2-0 start in Southern Conference play when the Paladins celebrate New Year's Day with a 1 p.m. tip-off versus VMI on Wednesday at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va.

Wednesday's contest will be streamed live on ESPN+ and can be heard on the Furman Sports Network from Van Wagner via 1440AM, the TuneIn Radio app and thru Paladin All-Access at FurmanPaladins.com.

Since suffering an 81-78 overtime defeat at No. 8 Auburn on December 5, Furman has won its last four games, including a thrilling 64-62 triumph over Mercer in the SoCon opener in Macon, Ga., on December 20. Senior Jordan Lyons, who leads the Paladins averaging 16.0 points per game, poured in 25 points versus the Bears, scored the go-ahead basket on a layup with 17 seconds remaining and tipped away a Mercer inbounds pass in the final second to help the Paladins claim their sixth consecutive league opener.

Furman (11-3, 1-0 SoCon) holds a 64-34 series lead versus VMI (5-9, 0-1 SoCon) entering Wednesday's 99th all-time meeting on the hardwood. The Paladins have swept the regular season home-and-home series versus the Keydets in each of the last four seasons to fashion an eight-game winning streak in the series with all eight victories coming by 12 or more points. Last season, Furman downed the Keydets 89-57 in Lexington before capturing a 96-62 victory in Greenville, S.C., on February 16, 2019, behind 19 points from forward Noah Gurley.

VMI, had won five of its previous seven games, including victories over UC Davis and Stetson, before falling 64-55 at Virginia Tech and 91-82 at USC Upstate in its last two outings. The Keydets dropped a 74-63 decision to UNCG in their SoCon opener on November 24.

Furman returns home on Saturday to host ETSU in a key SoCon game at Timmons Arena. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. and tickets are still available by visiting the Timmons Arena Box Office or logging onto FurmanPaladins.com.
