CARY, N.C.. -- Senior Jake Munns finished as the runner up in the blue singles draw to lead the Furman men's tennis team this weekend at the Duke James Bonk Invite in Cary, N.C. 

Munns opened the tournament with three-consecutive victories to reach the championship match.  He came from behind to beat Duke's Omni Kuman, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, in round one, then scored a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Robin Catry of N.C. State in round two.  In the semifinals, Munns defeated UNC Wilmington's 3-6, 6-3, 2-0 when the match was retired, then Andrew Zhang of Duke held off Munns, 6-4, 6-7(2), 7-5, in the championship match.

Junior Ivan Mitric placed third in the royal singles draw, while senior Jake Bhangdia finished fifth in the royal draw.  Mitric downed Charlotte's Collin Thompson, 7-5, 6-1, in the opening round then held off Collin Shick of N.C. State, 7-5, 7-6(4), in round two.  He won by default over Elon's Kyle Frankel in the final round.  Bhangdia beat Nilo Duarte of North Florida, 7-5, 6-4, then defeated N.C. State's Robert Turzak, 3-6, 6-3, 3-0, when the match was retired.  In the finals, Bhangdia won by default versus Jacob Bicknell of Elon.

In the white singles draw, senior Clarke Wilson scored a 6-2, 6-2 advantage over Charlotte's Benjamin Wayand in the opening round then defeated Ian Sturgill of Liberty, 6-1, 7-5 in round three.  He finished in fifth place after beating Gardner-Webb's Connor Enslin, 6-0, 6-1, in the final round.

In doubles action, the Paladins finished third in both the black and white draws.  Wilson and Munns teamed up to beat Frankel and Ponce of Elon, 7-5, in the first round of the black drawn then scored a 6-2 victory over North Florida's Duarte and Nunez in the third place match.  In the white draw, the Paladin duo of Mitric and Bhangdia held off Liberty's Mundt and Emerson, 7-6(11), in round one then claimed third place with a 6-4 advantage over Enslin and Putter of Gardner-Webb in the final round.

Furman will compete at the South Carolina Collegiate in Belton, S.C., Oct. 4-6.
