GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman men's tennis team will entertain Gardner-Webb and Winthrop this weekend at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C. The Paladins will take on Gardner-Webb Saturday at 1 p.m. then square off against the Eagles on Sunday at noon.
The Paladins enter the weekend at 0-3 after dropping three matches to tough competition over the past two weeks. Last weekend, Furman fell 5-2 at Clemson with wins at flights one and two singles.
Furman seniors Jake Munns and Jake Bhangdia are ranked tenth nationally, according to the final fall 2019-20 Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division I men's doubles poll.
The Paladins play their 2020 home opener on Saturday. Over the years, Furman has been very successful on its home court. Over the past 16 seasons the Paladins have lost only 31 matches at home, posting an impressive record of 136-31 since 2002.
Saturday's match marks the sixth meeting between Furman and Gardner-Webb. The Paladins, who lead the series 5-0, defeated the Runnin' Bulldogs, 6-1, in Greenville in 2018.
Gardner-Webb opens the spring season versus the Paladins on Saturday. The Runnin' Bulldogs posted a 13-8 overall record and 7-1 league mark in 2019.
The Paladins will square off against Winthrop Sunday in the 13th meeting between the two teams. Furman leads the series, 11-1, after defeating the Eagles, 5-2, in Greenville when the teams last met in 2014.
Winthrop dropped a 4-3 decision at Davidson last Sunday in the Eagles' season opener. The Eagles will play at Queens Saturday before coming to Greenville.
