FURMAN NOTABLES
  • Furman, tabbed as favorites in preseason polling of the Southern Conference media and picked to finish second in the league standings by the SoCon's 10 head coaches, opens the league schedule on Wednesday afternoon at unbeaten Chattanooga.
  • The Paladins closed the non-conference portion of their schedule on Dec. 21 with a 118-52 rout of South Carolina State at Timmons Arena. Junior Noah Gurley led six players in double figures with 19 points and six different players posted career scoring highs as the Paladins notched the second largest margin of victory in school history versus an NCAA Division I opponent.
  • A record-setting night versus the Bulldogs was highlighted by a school-record 33 assists, including at least one by all 13 players who appeared in the game, and a record-tying 21 three-point baskets, the most ever for the Paladins against a Division I foe.
  • Furman's 118 points versus S.C. State represented its highest scoring output versus NCAA Division I opposition since scoring 120 in a 120-91 win over St. Peters on Dec. 9, 1974.
  • With its 118-52 win over South Carolina State on Dec. 21, Furman claimed its 17th consecutive home victory at Timmons Arena. The victory marked Furman's 20th straight non-conference win at Timmons and 33rd win in its last 35 games overall in the facility.
  • Junior Mike Bothwell, who poured in a career-high 27 points in last January's 73-66 win at Chattanooga, leads the Paladins averaging 17.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.7 steals per game. He has topped 20 points in four of Furman's first nine games.
  • Fifth-year senior Clay Mounce (14.4 ppg, 5.0 rpg) grabbed two rebounds in a Dec. 15 loss at Alabama to reach 500 for his career and become just the 10th player in school history with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 150 assists in a career.
  • Head coach Bob Richey (79-29, 4th Yr), now in his fourth year, ranks in the top 12 among active NCAA Division I coaches with a .731 winning percentage.
  • The Paladins boast one of the most experienced starting lineups in the country with two seniors and three juniors. The lineup of senior Alex Hunter, junior Mike Bothwell, fifth-year senior Clay Mounce, redshirt-junior Noah Gurley and junior Jalen Slawson have combined to appear in 421 games and record 264 starts in the purple and white.
 
Furman vs. Chattanooga Series
  • Furman enters Wednesday's SoCon opener ranked fifth in the latest College Insider Mid-Major Top 25, while the Mocs are ranked 13th.
  • Wednesday's game marks the 91st meeting between Furman and Chattanooga with the Mocs holding a 54-36 series lead.
  • The Paladins have won the last seven meeting between the schools, including three consecutive encounters at McKenzie Arena.
  • Last season, Furman captured a 73-66 victory in Chattanooga, Tenn., behind a career-best 27 points from Mike Bothwell before edging the Mocs, 58-53, in Greenville on February 15, despite a 3-for-18 effort behind the arc.
  • Head coach Bob Richey is 6-0 all-time versus the Mocs.
 
Paladins Add Four Televised Games During SoCon Schedule
Furman will make three appearances on ESPNU and will face off versus Wofford on Feb. 6 in the Ingles SoCon Game of the Week on Nexstar affiliates throughout the southeast, it was announced in December. The Paladins will host ETSU on ESPNU on Jan. 16 at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in downtown Greenville before entertaining co-SoCon favorite UNCG on ESPNU Jan. 25 at Timmons Arena. The Paladins and Spartans will battle on ESPNU at the Greensboro Coliseum on Feb. 10 in Furman's third appearance on the year on the ESPN family of networks.
 
Furman's "Weekends at the Well" Series Returns In 2021
Furman basketball returns to downtown Greenville once again during the 2020-21 season with four "Weekends at the Well"! The Paladins host SoCon rival ETSU at Bon Secours Wellness Arena on January 16 before entertaining the Chattanooga Mocs at the Well on January 30. On February 6, Wofford and Furman will stage a rematch of last season's thrilling showdown at the Well.
