Fort Myers, Fla. – UIC scored six unanswered runs to erase an early Furman lead and down the Paladins, 6-1, in Friday morning softball action at the FGCU Invitational in Fort Myers, Fla.
After Furman jumped out to a 1-0 lead on
Natalie Morgan's RBI double in the bottom of the first inning that plated
Riley Ludlam, the Flames scored two runs in the second, one in the third and three in the fourth inning to take control. A double and fielder's choice tied the game in the top of the second before a throwing error allowed UIC (1-0) to grab a 2-1 lead.
Tara McElligott doubled and came all the way around to score on a throwing error by the left fielder in the top of the third to double the lead before the Flames posted a three-spot with a two-out rally in the fourth. Kayla Wedl reached on a two-out single, stole second and moved to third on an error ahead of Samantha Ferguson's base on balls. After a double steal plated Wedl, Alyssa Griman and McElligott delivered back-to-back hits to extend the margin to 6-1.
The Paladins (1-4) left multiple runners on base in three different innings and stranded eight on base for the game. Three of UIC's six runs were unearned as Furman committed four errors in the loss.
Christina Toliono (1-0) earned the win for UIC by limiting Furman to a run on four hits over four innings. She struck out three batters and walked two.
Morgan Smith (1-2) took the loss for Furman, allowing six runs on six hits in four innings. She walked three batters and fanned one.
Bailey Tanner fanned three batters in three scoreless innings of relief for the Paladins.
Morgan went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI to pace the Paladin offense.
Amanda Fleming registered a single and a walk.

On Saturday, Furman will conclude tournament play on Saturday against nationally-ranked Arkansas (4-1) and Memphis (3-2).
