CLEMSON, S.C. -- Clemson took advantage of a walk, hit batsman, and throwing error to score two fifth inning runs and take the lead en route to a 3-2 victory over Furman in baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
The win improves Clemson to 4-0 on the season while Furman falls to 2-3 on the season.
The Paladins led 2-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth when freshman relief pitcher
Matthew Marchal hit Tiger leadoff hitter Elijah Henderson. Â After Henderson stole second and Kier Meredith walked, Marchal fielded James Parker's sacrifice bunt but threw into him at first base for an error, allowing Henderson to score. Â Adam Hackenburg followed with a sacrifice fly to score Meredith to put Clemson up, 3-2.
Furman didn't mount a threat until the ninth when
Jared Mihalik drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice. Â With two outs
David Webel lifted a soft liner into short center field, but it was gloved by second baseman Pierce Gallo for the final out.
Webel had two of Furman's three hits. Â
Clemson managed only five hits against five Paladin pitchers.
Furman took a 2-0 lead in the first inning without a hit, taking advantage of three walks and two Tiger throwing errors. Â After pushing across the two runs, the Paladins' had runners at first and third with no outs but couldn't add on their advantage as Mack Anglin regrouped to strike out three consecutive Paladins to end the inning.
Clemson got on the board in its first turn at the plate on a Parker sacrifice fly.
Paladin batters struck out 13 times in the contest while Furman pitchers registered nine strikeouts.
The win was credited to Nick Hoffman (1-0), who pitched three scoreless innings of relief.
Marchal (0-1) took the loss for Furman.
