Maryland, Monmouth Down Furman Softball On Opening Day Of Eagle Round Robin

Paladins Face Evansville At 10 A.M. On Saturday

Greenville, S.C. – Maryland claimed a 9-2 victory over Furman softball and Monmouth topped the Paladins, 6-1, on the opening day of Georgia Southern's Eagle Round Robin Friday afternoon at Eagle Field in Statesboro, Ga.

The Terrapins plated five runs over the first two innings and cruised to a 9-2 victory over Furman in the opening game of the Eagle Round Robin after play was pushed back to 2 p.m. due to wet field conditions.
 
Taylor Okada went 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs and a pair of stolen bases, while teammate Taylor Liguori went 2-for-4 with two doubles to improve Maryland to 3-7 on the season. Starter Courtney Wyche worked around two hits and six Paladin walks to allow just two runs over four innings of work. She fanned five batters en route to improving to 1-3 in the circle. Trinity Schlotterbeck tossed three scoreless innings of relief to earn her first save.
 
Senior Morgan Smith took the loss for Furman after allowing five runs on eight hits in two innings of work. Reliever Bailey Tanner surrendered four runs in five innings as Paladin pitching gave up 16 hits in the tournament opener.
 
Furman plated its only runs on Smith's two-out, two-run single in the fourth inning. She went 1-for-2 and drew a base on balls. Casey Bigham also collected a single and a walk in the loss.
 
The Paladins left nine runners on base in the defeat.

In game two, Monmouth pushed across four runs in the first two innings and scored six unanswered runs to down Furman, 6-1
 
The Paladins opened the game with back-to-back doubles from Natalie Morgan and Amanda Fleming to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, before Monmouth scored three runs on four hits and a Paladin error in the bottom of the inning. Another error helped Monmouth score a run in the second inning and Kayla Rosado cracked a two-run homer in the sixth for the final margin.
 
Rosado went 3-for-4 and drove in four of the six runs for her team, while Lindsey Baron doubled and scored three runs. Alyssa Irons (2-2) limited the Paladins to a run on four hits over seven innings and struck out eight batters to earn the win.
 
Smith (1-5) took her second loss of the day for Furman. She allowed six runs, four earned, on nine hits in six innings in the circle. Fleming recorded two hits and an RBI for the Paladins.
 
Furman (1-9) will take on Evansville at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday before concluding play versus Georgia Southern at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
