Furman Prepares For Southern Conference Men's Basketball Championship

Paladins Play Wofford/Citadel Winner At 6 P.M. On Saturday

Greenville, S.C. – Furman begins its quest for a Southern Conference title and NCAA Tournament bid when it faces either No. 10 seed The Citadel or No. 7 seed Wofford in the quarterfinal round of the Ingles SoCon Men's Basketball Championship presented by General Shale at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Harrah's Cherokee Center Asheville in Asheville, N.C.

The Paladins enter the postseason as the No. 2 seed after fashioning a 25-6 overall record and 15-3 SoCon mark. Furman won 10 of its final 11 games to set a school record for regular season wins and SoCon victories, while matching the school record for overall wins. Ranked ninth in the latest College Insider Mid-Major Top 25, Furman enters the postseason at No. 68 in the latest NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET) rankings and No. 72 in the Pomeroy Ratings.
 
Making their 67th appearance in the SoCon Men's Basketball Championship, the Paladins are seeking to earn their seventh league tournament title and first since 1980. Furman holds a 52-60 all-time record in the SoCon Tournament and has reached the league semifinals in four of the last five years, including a trip to the SoCon Championship game in 2015.
 
The Citadel and Wofford will battle in first round action at 7:30 p.m. on Friday for the right to advance and face Furman. The Paladins swept two regular season games from the Bulldogs, including an 82-58 victory in the regular season finale at Timmons Arena last Saturday, to hold a 126-87 lead in the series between the schools. With its regular season sweep, Furman has won four straight versus the Bulldogs and eight of the last nine meetings. The Paladins hold a 5-2 edge versus the Bulldogs in postseason play with the last meeting, a 73-56 decision, going to the Paladins in the opening round of the 2015 tournament in Asheville.
 
Wofford and Furman split the regular season meetings with the Terriers claiming a 66-52 verdict in Spartanburg, S.C., on January 17, before Furman escaped with a 67-66 win at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville on February 22. Furman holds an 87-57 series lead, but Wofford has won 12 of the last 16 meetings. The only encounter between the schools in SoCon Tournament play was a 67-64 loss to the Terriers in the 2015 championship game in Asheville.
 
Saturday's quarterfinal round matchup and Sunday's potential semifinal round contest will be streamed live on ESPN+ and can be heard on the Van Wagner Furman Basketball Radio Network. Sunday's 7 p.m. championship game will air live on ESPN at 7 p.m.
