LONGWOOD, Fla. -- Former Furman women's golfer Laura Wearn (-10) won the Symetra Tour's IOA Classic presented by Homevalue.com in a playoff over former Paladin Haylee Harford (-10) Sunday at the par 71, 6,117 yard Alaqua Country Club in Longwood, Fla.
A native of Charlotte, N.C., Wearn entered Sunday's final round one stroke back of Harford after the Paladin duo each carded a 66 in Saturday's second round. Harford was two strokes up of Wearn at -9 with seven holes to play, before Wearn birdied three straight from No. 12 through No. 14 and four of the last seven to even the score at -10. In the playoff, Wearn parred No. 1, while Harford added a bogey.
Sunday's win marked the third-career Symetra Tour victory for Wearn, who also claimed the title at the 2019 Symetra Tour Championship and the Gosling's Dark 'n Stormy Classic in 2016. A Golfweek All-American selection for the Paladins in 2013, she competed in three NCAA regionals from 2010-2103 and was twice honored as a member of the All-Southern Conference team.
A three-time All-America selection, Harford, who hails from Leavittsburg, Ohio, recorded her highest career Symetra Tour finish after placing second on Sunday. Previously this year, she tied for 11th at both the FireKeepers Casino Hotel Championship and the Founders Tribute at Longbow Golf Club. Â
Furman women's golf alumna Taylor Totland (-6) tied for 13th Sunday at the IOA Classic, marking her highest career Symetra Tour finish and her second top-18 finish over the past month. A native of Tinton Falls, N.J., she was an All-American selection in 2017 and led the Paladins to three-consecutive SoCon titles from 2015-17.
"I am so proud of our former players," said Furman head coach Jeff Hull. "It was bittersweet to see Haylee and Laura end up in a playoff, but it was also exciting at the same time. Congrats to Laura on the win and to Haylee and Taylor on their great play!"Â
