Tennessee Tops Furman, 5-2

KNOXVILLE, TENN. -- Tennessee topped Furman, 5-2, Monday at the Goodfriend Tennis Center in Knoxville, Tenn. 

Paladin senior Katarina Kozarov and junior Julia Adams, who rank 27th nationally, defeated Tenika McGiffin and Carly Briggs, 6-4, in the top-seeded doubles contest, but the Volunteers captured wins at the other two flights to take the first point.  Esther Adeshina and Daria Kuczer downed junior Madison Dillon and freshman Ellie Schoppe, 6-4, at flight two, and Julie Ball and Rebeka Mertena teamed up for a 6-2 win over seniors MaryAnn Rompf and Georgie Walker at flight three.

Furman picked up singles points at flights one and six.  Fifteenth-ranked Kozarov held off Briggs, who ranks 118th, 7-6, 4-6, 1-0(10-2), at number one, and sophomore Maggie Pate outlasted Adeshina, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0(10-7), at number six.

Tennessee won the other four singles matches for the team victory.  Merena, who ranks 55th, topped Adams, 6-1, 6-4, at flight two, and McGiffin beat Dillon, 6-0, 6-1, at number three.  At flight four, Kuczer recorded a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Dillon, and Callie Creath entered the lineup at flight five, where she came from behind to defeat Schoppe, 5-7, 6-1, 1-0(10-8). 

Furman (0-2) will entertain Mississippi State Sunday at noon at the Mickel Tennis Center.  No spectators are allowed at the event, but live stats will be available at http://www.furmanpaladins.com.
