GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Mississippi State downed Furman, 6-1, Sunday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
The Paladins dropped a close doubles point to open the match. Furman senior Katarina Kozarov and junior Julia Adams, who rank 27th nationally, posted a 6-3 victory over Tamara Racine and Chloe Cirotte at flight one, and the Bulldog's Magda Adaloglou and Lilian Poling defeated junior Madison Dillon and rookie Ellie Schoppe, 6-3, at flight two. In the decisive flight three contest, Emma Antonaki and Alexandra Mikhailuk outlasted seniors MaryAnn Rompf and Georgie Walker, 7-6(5).
Fifteenth-ranked Kozarov tallied a 6-1, 6-4 advantage over Racine at flight one to score Furman's lone singles point. Antonaki, who ranks 69th nationally, held off Adams, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5), and Adaloglou slipped past Dillon, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, at number three. In the flight four contest, Mikhailuk came from behind to beat Rompf, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, and Poling scored a 6-3, 6-2 advantage over Schoppe at number five. At flight six, Cirotte defeated sophomore Maggie Pate, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-3).
Furman (0-2) will begin a three-match road swing next weekend. The Paladins will play at VCU Saturday at noon then square off at Duke Sunday at 11 a.m.
