Spartanburg, S.C. – The Furman men's soccer team netted two goals in the second half to break a 1-1 tie from
Jacob Garzon and
Jake Raine to give the Paladins a 3-1 victory over the Wofford Terriers on Saturday evening at Snyder Field.
Furman improves to 3-7-1 overall and 2-2 in the SoCon, while Wofford drops to 3-8-1 on the season and 1-2-1 in conference play.
The teams traded a pair of first half goals with the Paladins striking first less than three minutes into the contest following an own goal by the Terriers. Wofford followed in the 16
th minute when Brandon Oddy scored off an assist from Mitchell Myers to even the score at 1-1.
Garzon broke the tie during the 54
th minute scoring his third goal of the season with
Josh Hosie getting credit for his second assist. Hosie laid a cross back into the middle of the 18-yard box but right at a Wofford defender who attempted to clear the ball from its side of the field. The clear landed at the feet of Garzon outside the 18 and he scored inside the right post by Terrier goalkeeper Joshua Old.
Raine's team-leading sixth goal of the season extended Furman's lead to 3-1 in the 74
th minute and
Alfredo Diaz-Santillan earned his first assist of the year.
Callum Holland intercepted a Wofford pass at midfield and quickly distributed the ball to Diaz-Santillan. Diaz-Santillan beat one Terrier and dribbled to the outside of the 18-yard box and left a through ball by the defense. Raine raced to keep the ball from going out of bounds and made a sliding attempt from eight yards away. His attempt went past Old, who tried to reach back for the save, into the middle of the net.
Garzon and
Miles Fenton recorded a team-high two shots apiece for the Paladins and had one attempt on goal along with Raine. Furman goalkeeper
Ben Roberts finished with seven saves, falling one shy of matching his career high.
Myers and Nic Parker had four shots each to lead Wofford and Parker added three attempts on net. Old concluded the game with one save.
The Terriers held a 13-5 advantage in shots and 8-4 in attempts on goal. Wofford also led 10-2 in corner kicks.
The Paladins return home on Tuesday, October 19 to host ninth-ranked Duke at 7 p.m.
