HUNTINGTON, W., VA. -- Marshall slipped past a short-handed Furman, 4-3, Sunday at the Huntington Tennis Center in Huntington, W. Va.
The loss snaps the Paladins' four-match winning streak. Furman (5-5), who was competing without top player Katarina Kozarov, previously defeated Alabama, No. 16 Wake Forest, No. 18 South Carolina, then Virginia Tech leading up to Sunday's match.
The Thundering Herd (2-1) won two of three doubles matches to take the opening point. Liz Stefancic and Jutte Van Hansewyck topped junior Julia Adams and freshman Ellie Schoppe, 6-4, at flight one, and Madi Ballow and Madison Riley recorded a 6-4 advantage over sophomore Maggie Pate and freshman Ilayda Baykan at number three. The flight two match was unfinished, with Marshall's Rieke Gillar and Daniela Dankanych leading senior MaryAnn Rompf and junior Madison Dillon, 6-5.
Furman scored three singles points in the contest. Adams blew past Dankanych, 6-2, 6-3, at flight one, and Pate held off Van Hansewyck, 7-5, 6-2, at flight four. At number five, Schoppe posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Stefancic.
Marshall claimed the other three singles matches for the team victory. Anna Smith outlasted Dillon, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, at flight two, and Ballow downed Rompf, 6-3, 6-3, at flight three. In the decisive flight six contest, Riley defeated Baykan, 6-4, 6-1.
Furman will entertain Presbyterian Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center.
