Furman Falls To Stony Brook, Winthrop In Sunday Softball Action 5-4, 9-2

Paladins Host S.C. State On Wednesday At 3 P.M.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Rock Hill, S.C. – Furman dropped a pair of games on Sunday at the Winthrop Kickoff Tournament at Terry Field in Rock Hill, S.C., falling 5-4 to Stony Brook before dropping a 9-2 decision to Winthrop in the tournament finale.
 
Stony Brook 5, Furman 4
 
First baseman Melissa Rahrich belted a pair of home runs in the opening game of the day to drive Stony Brook to a 5-4 victory over Furman. The Seawolves plated two in the first inning, two in the third and scored the decisive run on Rahrich's solo shot in the fifth to claim their second win over Furman in as many days.
 
Amanda Fleming went 2-for-3 at the plate and delivered a pair of RBI singles for the Paladins, while Emily Bartlett cracked a seventh-inning homer as Furman attempted to rally in the final frame.
 
Dawn Bodrug came out of the bullpen to earn the win for Stony Brook allowing just one earned run on two hits over four innings in relief of starter Shelbi Denman. Furman's Sierra Tufts surrendered five runs on nine hits in seven innings to absorb the loss. She walked one batter and fanned four.
 
Rahrich finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and three runs to power the Seawolves' offense, while Lindsey Osmer and Shauna Nuss each collected two hits apiece.
 
Winthrop 9, Furman 2
 
In the Paladins' final game of the weekend, Winthrop erased an early 2-0 deficit with a five-spot in the bottom of the third inning and added four more runs in the fifth en route to a 9-2 victory.
 
Freshman Claire Ginder launched a second-inning homer to give Furman (1-4) a 2-0 lead, but pitcher Madyson Watson highlighted a five-run frame for the Eagles (5-4) with a three-run homer. Watson (2-3) allowed just two runs on two hits over seven innings to earn the victory. She walked three batters and fanned nine.
 
Bailey Tanner (1-2) lasted just two innings for Furman, allowing five runs on six hits before Winthrop reached reliever Shelby Basso for four runs on eight hits over four innings.
 
Watson went 3-for-3 with three RBI to pace the Eagles' 14-hit attack. Ginder and Riley Ludlam collected the only hits for the Paladins.
 
Furman returns home on Wednesday, February 24, to host South Carolina State at Pepsi Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. and fans can follow live statistics of the contest through StatBroadcast at FurmanPaladins.com.
 
NOTE: Furman has added a Thursday, March 18, doubleheader versus Presbyterian to its schedule. The Paladins and Blue Hose's twinbill has been scheduled to start at 5 p.m. at Pepsi Stadium.
