No. 23 Furman Trounces Charlotte & Kennesaw State

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- No. 23 Furman trounced Charlotte, 4-1, and Kennesaw State, 6-1, Saturday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.  The Paladins have won eight out of their last nine matches, including victories over Alabama, 16th-ranked Wake Forest, No. 18 South Carolina, and Virginia Tech.

In the day's first match versus Charlotte, the Paladins won two out of three doubles matches to win the point.  Senior Katarina Kozarov and junior Julia Adams, who rank 27th nationally, blanked Ruxi Schech and Kaavya Sawhney, 6-0, at flight one, then junior Madison Dillon and senior MaryAnn Rompf defeated Margaux Maquet and Jenna Dean, 6-2, at number two.  The flight three match was unfinished, with Furman freshman Ellie Schoppe and sophomore Maggie Pate leading Emma Wilkins and Rocio Safont, 4-2.

Furman won three singles matches to complete the victory.  Kozarov, who ranks 15th nationally, blew past Maquet, 6-1, 6-2, in the top-seeded contest, and Adams topped Schech, 6-3, 6-2, at flight two.  Rompf came from behind to clinch the team win, beating Sawhney, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, at flight four.  

The 49ers (9-4) scored at flight three, where Safont handed Dillon a 6-1, 6-3 loss.  Matches at flights five and six were unfinished.  Pate led Wilkins, 6-2, at number five, and Schoppe was leading Dean, 6-4, when the match was called.

On Saturday evening, Furman captured two of three matches to take the doubles point over Kennesaw State.  Kozarov and Adams defeated Taylor Dean and Valentina Taddia, 6-3, at flight one, and at flight three, Pate and Schoppe blanked Soomin Kim and Sofia Pinedo, 6-0.  The flight two match was unfinished with Paola Cortez and Ji Youn Lee leading Dillon and Rompf, 5-4.

In singles, Adams moved to flight one, where she beat Dean, 6-1, 6-2.  At flight two, Dillon topped Cortez, 6-0, 6-3.  Pate blew past Taddia, 6-1, 6-2, at number four, and Schoppe made quick work of Pinedo, posting a 6-3, 6-2 victory.  Freshman Ilayda Baykan entered the lineup at flight six, where she beat Kim, 1-6, 6-2, 1-0(6).

The Owls (2-4) scored at flight three, as Lee defeated Rompf, 6-4, 6-4.

Furman (9-5, 1-0 SoCon) hits the road next weekend for three matches in Florida.  The Paladins will square off against UCF in Orlando on Saturday at 3 p.m. before facing South Florida and North Florida later during the trip.
