JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. -- Furman junior Sarah-Eve Rhéaume (-4) won the individual title Tuesday at the 2021 Southern Conference Women's Golf Championship at the par-72, 6,006 yard Oak Point Golf Club at Kiawah Island Golf Resort on Johns Island, S.C. The Paladins (+13) finished as runner-up in the team competition.
A native of Lac-Delage, Canada, Rhéaume, who recorded her first career victory, was even on the front after carding a birdie on No. 8 and finished the day with a 2-over 74, taking the title by just one stroke over teammate Madison Moosa (-3), a senior from Charlotte, N.C. Moosa fired a 68 with a team-high four birdies, including three-straight birdies from No. 3 through No. 5, on Tuesday.
With Rhéaume's victory, Furman has produced a league-best 17 SoCon individual medalists. Rhéaume's three-round total of 70-68-74=212 ties the second-lowest 54-hole score in SoCon tournament history, matching Paladin Alice Chen's score in 2015.
As the league champion, Rhéaume earns an individual entry into the NCAA Championships, which will begin May 10-12 at four regional sites: Baton Rouge, La.; Columbus, Ohio; Louisville, Ky., and Stanford, Calif. The NCAA regional fields will be announced live on the Golf Channel on Wednesday, April 28, when the Paladin team will find out if its season will continue in the national tournament.
"I am really proud of Sarah-Eve," said Furman head coach Jeff Hull. "She played incredibly well over the last two days. It was really nice for her to get her first career win at the SoCon championship and earn the automatic individual bid into regionals. I am also very proud of Madison, who played really well the last two rounds to finish second. This was a great way to end her SoCon career."
Sophomore Anna Morgan (+7) tied for 11th after tallying a 1-over 73 with consecutive birdies on No. 14 and No. 15 in the tournament's final round, while senior Carly Burkhardt (+13) finished in a tie for 22nd after scoring a 74 with three birdies from No. 8 through No. 11 on Tuesday. Freshman Sophia Burnett (+20) shot a 74 with a birdie on No. 12 to tie for 34th.
ETSU (+12), who won its first SoCon women's golf championship and claimed the league's automatic bid to the NCAA regionals, was even par as a team over the last three holes to win the title by one stroke over Furman (+13), who held a three-stroke lead entering the final three holes. Mercer (+20) finished third, followed by Chattanooga (+33) in fourth place.
