Lane’s Game-Winner Lifts Furman Past Gardner-Webb, 2-1

Raine Tallies One Goal, One Assist in Victory

Greenville, S.C. – Dylan Lane's goal in the 87th minute gave the Furman men's soccer team its first victory of the season with a 2-1 win over the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs on Friday evening from Stone Stadium.

Furman improves to 1-1 on the season while Gardner-Webb drops to 0-3 overall.

Following a throw in by Sam Miller to Jacob Garzon in front of the Paladin bench, Garzon laid off a pass over the Runnin' Bulldog defense to Jake Raine 10 yards in front of the net. Raine's attempt deflected off the crossbar, but Lane was there for the quick rebound and scored the game-winner for his first goal of the season.

Gardner-Webb had tied the game at 1-1 in the 79th minute on a header by Laurits Lillemose following a corner kick. Sebastian Reventlow took the corner kick far side and placed the ball at the far post where Furman attempted to clear it with a header. The ball went to Lillemose whose header from just outside the 8-yard box went over the Paladin defense into the top-right corner of the net.

Raine gave the Paladins a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute with his first goal of the season. Furman had possession of the ball far side before working its way around to Josh Hosie in front of the Runnin' Bulldog bench. Hosie beat one defender before laying a cross back into the middle of the 18-yard box. Raine's diving header from eight yards away snuck inside the left post to put the Paladins on the board first.

Raine led Furman offensively with six shots, including two on goal, while tallying one goal and one assist. Lane added two shots with both going on goal. Hosie collected his first assist of the season. Ben Roberts made four saves in goal to record his first collegiate victory.

Odal Brown attempted a team-high four shots for Gardner-Webb, and Ryan Madondo and Abdul Manaf Amadu tallied two attempts on goal each. In goal, Mallel Rios registered two saves.

The Runnin' Bulldogs held an 18-13 advantage in shots and led 8-4 in corner kicks.

The Paladins continue their four-game homestand on Monday, September 6 hosting Winthrop at 7 p.m.
