Friday's Frank Selvy Night Matchup Features Mid-Major Powers Furman And Belmont

Greenville, S.C. – Timmons Arena will be the focal point for many college basketball fans on Friday night when the Furman Paladins celebrate "Frank Selvy Night" when hosting the Belmont Bruins in a matchup of mid-major powers. Friday's game will be sponsored by Common Pops.

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Bryant Lambert and Terrence Oglesby calling the action. Fans can listen to Furman play-by-play voice Dan Scott and Tom Van Hoy's radio broadcast on The Fan Upstate at 97.7 FM and 1330 AM. The radio broadcast will also be streamed on Audacy.com.

Fans can purchase single game tickets to catch Furman men's basketball in action at Timmons Arena starting at $15. Paladin fans can also renew or purchase new season tickets online by CLICKING HERE, calling the Furman Ticket Office, or by emailing tickets@furman.edu to begin the purchasing process and get more information.

Furman basketball legend Frank Selvy is scheduled to be in attendance on Friday and will sign autographs prior to tip-off. Selvy, who will be inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City, Mo., on November 20, will also be honored at halftime.

From 1951-54 Selvy piled up points like few players have in college basketball history. He led NCAA Division I in scoring both as a junior with 29.5 points per game and as a senior with an average of 41.7, and overall averaged 32.5 points over his three-year career. Most notably, Selvy scored a Division I record 100 points on 41-of-66 shooting against Newberry on Feb. 13, 1954, at Textile Hall in downtown Greenville — a scoring mark that has never been matched. All told, the Corbin, Ky., native topped 50 points on eight occasions and scored 40 points or more in 22 games during his Paladin tenure, helping Furman to a 59-21 overall record while competing in a Southern Conference that at the time included future Atlantic Coast Conference members North Carolina, N.C. State, and Duke, among others.

A two-time Southern Conference Player of the Year selection, three-time first team All-SoCon and All-America choice, including consensus All-America and United Press National Player of the Year pick in 1954, he was a first round selection in the 1954 NBA Draft by the Baltimore Bullets.  Selvy made two NBA All-Star Teams over a nine-year professional career that was interrupted by three years of military service.

The Paladins enter Friday night's matchup at 1-0 after claiming a 91-55 victory over NCAA Division II North Greenville in Monday's season opener at Timmons Arena. Preseason All-Southern Conference selections Jalen Slawson and Mike Bothwell paced six Paladins in double figures with 17 and 16 points, respectively, while Garrett Hien grabbed a career-best 12 rebounds.

Friday's contest pits Furman, ranked No. 6 in the latest College Insider Mid-Major Top 25, against No. 21 Belmont. The Bruins (1-0), who recently joined the Missouri Valley Conference, hold a 2-1 lead in the all-time series between the schools and scored a 95-89 overtime victory versus the Paladins last November in Nashville, Tenn. Belmont opened the season with a buzzer-beating 70-69 victory over MAC member Ohio on Monday at home in the Curb Events Center.

Following tonight's game, Furman will be idle until Thursday, November 17 when it opens play in the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic versus Penn State in Charleston, S.C. Tip-off at TD Arena between the Paladins and Nittany Lions is set for 11:30 a.m. and the game will air live on ESPNU.
