LOUISVILLE, KY. -- Furman's Bethany Graham and Dylan Schubert earned automatic bids to the NCAA Championships after leading the Paladins Friday at the 2022 NCAA Southeast Region Championship at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky.
Graham, a junior from Aldie, Va., qualified automatically on the women's side by virtue of her fifth-place individual finish, while Schubert, a junior from Loveland, Colo., earned an automatic bid on the men's side after placing fourth individually.
In the opening race of the day, the Furman women scored 133 points to take fourth place. N.C. State won the meet with 25 points, while North Carolina was second with 76 points. Virginia placed third after tallying 109 points. The Wolfpack and Tar Heels grabbed the region's two automatic bids, so the Paladins will learn on Saturday at 5 p.m. during the NCAA selection show if they are one of the 13 teams to receive at-large bids.
Graham paced the Furman women with a time of 20:11.1 on the 6K course, while senior Abigail Robertson joined Graham on the all-region team after crossing the line in 20:37.8 for 15th place. Freshman Jenna Mulhern finished 32nd with a time of 20:59.1, and junior Megan Marvin placed 41st at 21:11.7. Junior Emily Little completed the Paladin scorers in 43rd place with a time of 21:11.7. Junior Madelynne Cadeau finished 52nd with a time of 21:23.6, while sophomore Sierra Bower placed 55th at 21:28.0.
On the men's side, Furman finished eighth with 251 points. North Carolina won the regional with 61 points, and Virginia took second place with 83 points to earn the region's two automatic team bids.
Schubert posted a time of 29:50.1 to lead Furman on the 10K course. Senior David Ahlmeyer finished 43rd at 30:45.9, and junior Carson Williams placed 53rd with a time of 30:59.0. Senior Adam Beucler recorded a time of 31:19.6 to take 70th place, and sophomore Nick Goldstein was 85th with a time of 31:44.0 to complete the five scorers for the Paladins. Sophomore Foster Wilfong placed 90th at 31:51.4, and senior Josh Powers was 107th at 32:14.3.
The NCAA Championships will be held on Saturday, Nov. 19, in Stillwater, Okla. The women's 6K will begin at 10:20 a.m. ET, with the men's 10K to follow at 11:10 a.m. ET.
