MONTGOMERY, ALA. -- No. 42 Furman upset No. 24 Texas Tech Saturday evening to conclude play at the Blue Gray Tournament in Montgomery, Ala.
The Paladins claimed the doubles point with victories at flights one and two. Senior Julia Adams and sophomore Ellie Schoppe, who rank 23rd nationally, defeated Margarita Skriabina and Cristina Tiglea, 6-1, in the top-seeded match up, and freshman Ellie Schulson and junior Madison Dillon blew past Metka Komac and Kailey Evans at number two. The flight three contest was unfinished with Avelina Sayfetdinova and Olivia Peet leading freshman Jess Dawson and junior Maggie Pate, 4-3.
The Red Raiders won the first two singles points, taking matches at flights three and five, to lead 2-1. Sayfetdinova, who ranks 62nd nationally, topped Dillon, 6-3, 6-1, at number three, and Komac beat Schulson, 6-0, 6-4, at number five.Â
Furman's Schoppe downed Peet, 6-3, 6-3, at flight two to tie the match at 2-apiece, then Dawson put the Paladins ahead, 3-2, with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 victory over Bojana Marinkov at number six. The teams split sets at flights one and six, four, with Furman needing just one additional point for the win. Adams, who ranks 54th nationally, sailed to a quick 6-2 third-set victory over 16th-ranked Skriabina at flight one to clinch the match, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Â
The flight four match was unfinished. Furman's Snyder won the first set, 6-2, then Evans countered with a 7-6 advantage in set two.
"This was a fantastic weekend for our team," said Furman head coach Adam Herendeen. "It is absolutely incredible to see how much our players have grown already this year! I am really proud of them, and I am excited to see them keep improving the rest of the year."
Earlier in the day, the Paladins dropped a 4-0 decision to tenth-ranked Oklahoma State. Dawson and Pate led at flight three doubles, 5-4, when doubles play was halted. In singles, Adams led, 5-4, in set two at flight one, and Dawson won the first set, 7-5, at flight six.
Furman (9-5) is idle until March 19, when the Paladins will square off against James Madison in Charlotte at 1 p.m. in a match that was postponed earlier in the season due to inclement weather in January.
