Furman Falls in Final Seconds to UNCG, 58-56

Hunter Becomes Program's All-Time 3-Point Leader

Greenville, S.C. – The Furman men's basketball team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon following a 58-56 loss to the UNC Greensboro Spartans in Southern Conference play from Bon Secours Wellness Arena.

Furman drops to 17-8 on the season and 9-3 in conference play, while UNCG improves to 13-10 overall and 5-6 in the league.

Alex Hunter became the Paladins' all-time leading 3-point shooter in the contest, connecting on two triples to give him 289 for his career. He surpasses Jordan Lyons who compiled 288 from 2017-20.

Mike Bothwell scored a game high 18 points to lead Furman and added five rebounds, three steals and one block. Marcus Foster provided 10 points and eight rebounds. Jalen Slawson had nine points, 12 rebounds, five assists and two steals.

De'Monte Buckingham led the Spartans with 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Bas Leyte contributed a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Kaleb Hunter tallied 10 points and six rebounds. Keyshaun Langley dished out four assists.

UNC Greensboro held a 17-point lead, 55-38, with 7:14 remaining in the contest before the Paladins fought back with an 18-0 run over the next 6:15. Furman went ahead 56-55 with 59 seconds to go when Garrett Hien knocked down a 3-pointer, giving the Paladins their first lead since the 15:43 mark of the first half. Leyte went 3-for-3 at the charity stripe over the next 53 seconds with his last giving UNCG a 58-56 advantage. Foster's game-tying field goal attempt just before the buzzer fell short.

Furman opened the game on an 8-4 run and used a 3-point play by Bothwell to take a four-point lead at the 16:46 mark. The Spartans would go in front by four before Foster and Conley Garrison recorded four straight points to even the score at 12-12 five minutes later. UNCG responded with a 20-8 run to take its largest lead of the half at 32-20 when Dante Treacy connected on a 3-pointer with 1:37 left. Slawson's offensive rebound and layup with 59 seconds to go sent the Paladins into halftime trailing 32-22.

UNCG built its lead out to 15 points, 37-22, to start the second half but Furman would cut it to 39-31 at the 13:36 mark after a jumper by Bothwell. The Spartans held their largest lead of the game at 53-36 with 7:14 remaining to cap a 14-5 run. Mohammed Abdulsalam kept UNC Greensboro's lead at 17 points its next possession with a layup.

Hunter's record-breaking triple came with 5:11 to go in the contest and trimmed the Paladins' deficit down to 55-46. Furman scored five of its next six points at the free throw line before Hien's 3-pointer put it ahead by one.

The Paladins concluded the game shooting 30.2 percent from the field while making 12-of-13 (92.3 percent) at the charity stripe.

Furman held a 15-11 advantage in second chance points after registering 16 offensive rebounds.
