FORT MYERS, FLA. -- Florida Gulf Coast slipped past Furman, 4-3, Wednesday in a men's tennis contest at the FGCU Tennis Complex in Fort Myers, Fla.
The Eagles won two doubles matches to take the opening point. Randy Wilson and Eric Oncins teamed up to beat freshmen Cole Burnam and Elijah Poritzky, 6-3, at flight two, and Marcelo Sepulveda and Juan Montes defeated sophomore Emil Westling and senior James Roelofse, 6-3, at number three. The flight one match was unfinished, with Furman graduate student Ivan Mitric and freshman Jamie Connel, who rank 29th nationally, leading Max Damm and Magnus Johnson, 6-5.
Florida Gulf Coast scored the first three singles points to secure the win. Johnson topped Mitric, 6-1, 6-3, at flight one, then Wilson downed Roelofse, 6-1, 6-2, at flight four. At number three, Sepulveda outlasted Poritzky, 7-5, 6-4.
Furman won the remaining singles matches, with Connel holding off Montes, 6-4, 7-5, at flight two, and Westling slipping by Gugli Stefanacci, 6-4, 7-6(4). Graduate student Drew Singerman entered the lineup at flight five, where he recorded a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 advantage over Juan Lopez.
The Paladins (8-6) will face South Florida Friday at 10 a.m. in Tampa, Fla.
